What to Wear to Museum?

by 顺之 聂 05 Mar 2024

Visiting museums and theaters has become an integral part of modern life. When going to a vernissage, not only ladies but often men ask themselves what museum outfits to choose. Even the scandalous rock musician Sergei Shnurov worried about this question, of what is appropriate to appear "at the Van Gogh exhibition".

Democratization of modern fashion and society as a whole long ago does not require us to wear evening dresses to the theater, reverently monitor that the color of gloves was in tone with the outfit, and the style of the hat strictly corresponded to the event. Moreover, today even the most informal clothing, such as summer shorts, hardly attracts in the art gallery or at an exhibition disapproving attention of the public. Undoubtedly, there are many advantages in rejecting conventions, but at the same time, such prosaicism deprives us of the peculiar charm of tradition and makes the occasion, which could be special, much more ordinary.

Just look closely and you'll notice how many girls and guys go to art galleries in tracksuits, sloppy t-shirts, and jeans. After all, an exhibition is a place where many people with refined artistic taste and at the same time a bright individuality come. Here you can often meet people dressed unusually and originally. One does not want to fall behind, but it is also not desirable to look too tasteless. Can only red Louboutins save the situation? In order not to get into a misstep should follow the basic rules. We tell and show you how to choose museum outfits for a trip to a museum or an exhibition unconventionally and with fantasy!

Do Museums Have a Dress Code?

In the last decade, the boundaries of what is considered a theatrical dress code have been very much blurred. There has been a "democratization" in fashion if you translate it into the language of clothing - "casualization". Today in the theater, for example, you can go in an evening dressing gown, and in a quite casual set of jeans and a T-shirt. Undoubtedly, there are many pluses in the refusal of conventions, but at the same time, such flatness deprives us of the peculiar charm of tradition and makes a special exciting occasion ordinary. After all, we come to the museum or theater for aesthetic pleasure, and our thought-out appropriate museum outfits will create a harmonious resonance with the creative cultural space.

Different venues invite different characteristic events, and the selection of clothes for the event will be an important issue of appropriateness. That is, when choosing an image, it is worth assessing what theater or museum, what performance or exhibition you are going to. "Overdressed" at the opening of the vernissage of modern art will be as ridiculous as to come to a significant theatrical premiere in "aged" everyday clothes.

We no longer associate museums with anything special, as we try to go to one of the exhibitions on the weekend and enjoy the art. This lifestyle, and a style that values convenience, have influenced what we choose as our museum outfits. In our daily lives, the best choice for going to theaters and exhibitions is a stylish casual outfit that combines practicality, comfort, and sophistication. Too festive, evening toilets in the modern environment of our small city look too archaic and not prudent, but the combinatorics of kits from the models of "casual" with more dressy, chic things will be quite justified.

Chic Museum Outfit Ideas

When choosing an image for a cultural outing, remember that museums are places of strength, beauty, and aesthetics, so first of all, refuse sports and street attributes: joggers, bulky hoodies with eye-catching prints, and neon color palettes. If you can't give up your sneakers, choose neater models that will look harmoniously with your outfit.

Feminine dress
What dress to choose as a museum outfit? There can be many options, but we know for sure that you should not go to the exhibition in sexy models with revealing slits or in sweatshirt dresses - leave these styles for other occasions. We suggest going to the museum in a feminine image, for example, in a dress shirt, "case", combination, or in a stylish leather version. There are no strict rules here, so wear the thing in which you feel confident and beautiful.

Knitted top and maxi skirt
This season, as museum outfits, fashion designers suggest girls wear long skirts made of leather, denim, or knitwear - this is how we will feel the spirit of the noughties and try to repeat the fashion of the newly returned era. It is best to combine such a style with a basic knit top, which will balance the voluminous bottom and make the image casual. Celebrities style maxi-length skirts with vintage sneakers, which we recommend you try as well. Don't forget to complete the look with jewelry: wear massive gold earrings and wide bracelets.

Skirt with suit
This is already a more feminine variation of the pantsuit, and it should also be in every girl's closet. When you choose your museum outfit, you can try on a voluminous jacket with a pencil skirt, a Chanel-style tweed suit with large buttons, or find completely unusual models with an asymmetrical skirt or jackets with slits.

Turtleneck with leather skirt
If you already have a white or black turtleneck in your basic closet, you can safely buy a couple more, for example, in one of the shades of brown or khaki, as the fashion of recent years shows, this thing has been with us for a long time. Complete your museum outfits with a bold leather skirt and head to the museum, where you will decide who is the main exhibit at the exhibition.

Shirt and jeans
For those who are not ready to dress up for museum outfits, but still want to look stylish, there is another fashionable image in which you can safely go to your favorite museum. Put on stylish jeans and combine them with a shirt "off the man's shoulder". The top can be classic cotton in basic colors or, for example, from denim. Unbutton the top buttons of the shirt, put a tie on top, or try throwing the shirt over a laconic top - there is a perfect space for fashion experiments.

Pantsuit
The pantsuit has boldly crept into women's closets and has become a fashion classic that everyone wants to follow. Choose a set of free cuts, trying on wide pants and a jacket of straight silhouette, so you will make the image stylish and yet casual. You can wear the suit both on the naked body, fastening all the buttons, and on a bright top or a voluminous shirt. Combine your museum outfit with weightless sandals in an accent color, with rough boots or elegant shoes.

Colorful Confidence
Art is all about colors and self-expression, so why not let that extend to your museum outfits as well? Opt for bright hues and showcase your vibrant personality. Choose a brightly colored or patterned shirt as an accent to your ensemble and pair it with neutral-colored pants or jeans to keep it balanced. Don't be afraid to experiment with contrasting shades or complementary color combinations. It's all about expressing yourself and standing out from the crowd with classic neutral looks.

Complete the museum outfits with pointy-toed ballet flats or shoes with a square toe, but take care in advance that you feel comfortable in the shoes - you will simply not have enough strength to walk around all the halls of the Tretyakov Gallery in stilettos. Since the museum still excludes the evening dress code, you can safely combine images with laconic sneakers, which will look feminine and romantic.

Don't forget to pay attention to accessories.
Sometimes it is enough to "invite" only accessories into your museum outfits, and the everyday image will instantly turn into a more festive one! Stylish earrings, elegant clutch, spectacular shoes, and even just a bright lipstick instantly increase the "degree" of dressiness! But, first of all, the basis of any image is, of course, the general grooming and a stable belief in their beauty! No outfit will not save a gray dull face, slouching back, and "neglected" hairstyle.

Do not take large bags with your museum outfits, because they will look too bulky, and your back can quickly get tired because of the heaviness. Look at clutches, which are at the peak of popularity this season, or choose a small leather bag, such as a baguette, hobo, or saddle - these models will hold all the essentials.

You can approach this issue with imagination and try to create your image, for example, corresponding to the theme of the exhibition! At the exhibition, avant-garde artists wear something with a minimalist geometric print, spots of color, and angles in jewelry. If the exhibition is marine-themed, then include in the image a blue-green color scheme and smooth lines, and if you go to watch the classical masters of painting, you can choose your museum outfit in calm elegant tones, using restraint in details, cut and minimalist jewelry. By doing so, you not only infuse yourself with visual aesthetics but also "pump up" your stylistic taste!

However, despite the fact that fashion is now ruled by eclecticism, and there are no strict rules for museum outfits, the following will still be inappropriate in the theater or at an exhibition:

⁃ Clothing for sports. Sneakers in sports style and sneakers for sports are not the same. You can dress in the theater in the style of "sport-chic", as long as no more than 1-2 details of this direction are introduced in your image.

⁃ No to beach fashion. Flip-flops, tank tops, and shorts are beautiful at sea

⁃ No to big shopping bags.

⁃ No overtly provocative sexy clothes. Theater and museum is not a "meat" market, but a temple of art!

⁃ No boring, "dry" office clothes. "Disciplining" things will not allow you to relax and "float" on the pleasure of what you see and hear - art does not "go" well into a tense body.
