What Is Considered Vintage?

by LiWenshan 16 Nov 2023

When you are asked to create a "vintage style" design or look, what does that mean? The term "vintage" encompasses a range of styles from several decades and genres of design. With this guide, I will take you through a few of the most popular vintage styles in design so that you can bring a touch of vintage to your work yourself, and do so with more authenticity and attention to detail. Vintage is something that is at least three decades old. However, not all 30-year-old things are vintage. Let's break down how to recognize vintage and distinguish it from outdated clothing.

When we hear the word "vintage", the association with something fashionable, made decades ago, and very expensive comes to mind. These things, which have special properties and came to us from other eras, are selected by specialists, exhibited on the shelves of vintage stores, at auctions, or even in museums, as well as used for interior design. Today, people are buying things from yesteryear to add a trendy vintage accent to their look. I confess and repent of my ignorance. "Rarity", "Antique", and "Vintage"—words that often flicker in my texts, and you in the comments. But the thin line between these seemingly simple and understandable terms, even myself can not explain clearly. I have figured out the issue and am ready to share my knowledge with you - in case it comes in handy!

Definition of Vintage

Vintage is the stylization of antiques, what used to be called "Retro style". The adjective "vintage" is often used about furniture, clothing, tableware, and appliances that are stylized to look like the good old days, or that represent these periods. The French word "Vintage" comes from winemaking, which is used in two meanings: as the process of selecting grapes for a particular type of wine and as wine from the most successful years in terms of the quality of the wine material. In other words, Vintage Port is not just "vintage" but also "quality". Coming into fashion, the term originally meant an item of clothing with the brand of a certain fashion house from a particular year's collection. When amateurs (designers, stylists, representatives of bohemia) got involved in the search for such clothes, the word acquired a broader meaning.

Vintage items can be clothing, accessories, furniture, decor items, or other things. They often have a unique style made in techniques, materials, or details that are no longer used in modern manufacturing. Vintage items usually have a history that gives them a special appeal and significance. They may be rare, unique, or have a connection to a specific historical event or person. The term "vintage" is often used to describe the fashion and style associated with a specific period, such as the 1950s or 1970s. It can be used to describe both authentic vintage items as well as new items that are styled from a past time. Vintage style is not only a way to create a unique interior or look, but also an opportunity to preserve and convey history and cultural heritage.

What Is Vintage Fashion?

Vintage fashion has a long and interesting history, starting with the first clothing and accessories in the last century. It spans from the 1920s to the 1980s when vintage became a popular style of dress. In the 1920s, with the advent of new materials and technology, fashion began to change. The era of jazz, rock, and roll, and distinctive styles influenced fashion. Young people began to reject traditional clothing features and previously considered abnormal changes in fashion. This period is key to the development of vintage fashion as it incorporated new ideas and styles.

A few decades later, in the 1950s, a second wave of vintage gradually emerged. Fashion designers began to look to the past, taking inspiration from the ideas and styles of the previous decades. This led to the revival of popular trends such as tutu skirts , velvet dresses, and turtle suits. At the same time, there was a growing interest in vintage clothing among fashion enthusiasts. In the 1960s and 1970s, vintage fashion became popular among young people inspired by different cultures and music. New trends such as hippie and punk emerged. These styles implied the use of bright colorful elements, unusual colors, and emblem symbols. Young people began to get into vintage clothing, combining classic dresses and accessories with modern fashion elements.

Today, vintage fashion is still popular. It has become the main source of inspiration for fashion designers and shoppers. Vintage outfits and accessories are a great opportunity to create a unique look and express your individuality. Due to its unique style and historical significance, vintage fashion will continue to inspire and delight people for years to come.

Vintage fashion has an exciting and enduring appeal that transcends generations. These carefully selected pieces hold stories and characters, making them more than just clothing; they are pieces of history. In a world of fast fashion, vintage offers an antidote, allowing people to express their unique style using the craftsmanship and attention to detail of yesteryear.

Stability is at the forefront of today's fashion consciousness, and vintage fashion fits perfectly with this ethos. When you embrace vintage, especially through secondhand clothing wholesale channels, you are not only acquiring unique pieces but also contributing to a more comfortable future. By reusing and recycling clothing from previous decades, you're helping to reduce the fashion industry's environmental impact, one vintage find in time.

Timeframe for Vintage Clothing

Nowadays, vintage style in clothing is still as popular as ever, especially among fashionistas and celebrities. Followers of this style wear original clothes from a certain period of the vintage fashion era, trying to fully comply with its spirit. If you have a desire to try on a vintage image, it will give you the sophistication and uniqueness that every woman seeks, especially if it is dressed in a vintage style. But do not forget that not all clothes of previous years can be considered vintage: they should not just be old, but, above all, they should reflect the sharp fashion trends of their time. Therefore, modern fashionistas need to have a clear idea of what exactly in what era was worn and what was popular in each period.

Thus, the vintage of the 20s is remembered as an era of rebellion and freedom of manners. Girls dyed their hair in the most incredible colors, applied excessively bright makeup, and dressed in shapeless dresses, and the invariable attributes in the image served as a cigarette on a long mouthpiece and gloves. The ideal figure was narrow hips and prominent shoulders. Opening the forehead at that time was considered bad taste, so widespread were various headdresses, decorated with feathers, embroidery, or flowers. Trendy was the so-called "bell" hat. At that time fashionable were short haircuts, arranged in beautiful waves. And from jewelry - long strings of pearls. Dresses were straight cut, often with a low waistline and quite long – up to the middle of the calf. Also fashionable were deep cut-outs on the back and pleating. Evening fashion involved using sequins, netting, feathers, and fringe.

The vintage fashion of the 30s is characterized by femininity and elegance. Evening toilets were characterized by luxury and glitter, and everyday clothes were practical. At that time some collar-hammock collars and dresses were tied around the neck. Dresses and skirts were sewn by shortening the front and slightly lengthening the back. Draping and pleated pleats were used to create extra volume.

To emphasize the waist was the main purpose of clothes of the 40s. A jacket of fitted silhouette with sharp shoulders and length to the middle of the thigh becomes a fashion peak. It was worn with a narrow or flared skirt. Clash dresses with lengths up to the middle of the shin were popular. Colors are different, but plaid and polka dots especially emphasize the vintage style. Evening dresses can be with open shoulders. The style of "militaria" at this time was just emerging.

The 50s is all about sexy, strapless swimsuits, corsets, and tight-fitting tank tops in floral, checkered, polka dots; flared puffy skirts and headbands.

The 60s were remembered for bright colors, and contrasting combinations, and clothes became less feminine. Arrow pants, jeans, loafers, brightly colored shirts with wide sleeves, and trapezoidal-shaped dresses were fashionable.

Vintage is fashionable. Creating your image, combining modern things and clothes in vintage style, and dressing in vintage things from head to toe are not worth it, except for solemn events. By the way, in recent times, weddings in vintage style have been extremely popular. And remember, the main thing is.

What Is the Difference Between Vintage and Antique?

The term "vintage" is commonly used to describe things that are at least 20 but not more than 60 years old. (Originally, "vintage" was a winemaker's term for a collector's wine that was at least 15 years old). Another criterion for "vintage" is that the item must embody the fashion trends of its time. In other words, vintage is a "fashion piece" of a certain period. The age of antique items is greater than that of vintage - the main part of experts agree that the antique thing can not be less than 50 years old. True, in some countries, the product will only be considered antique if it is older than 100 years. Another parameter by which you can attribute a thing to the antique - is its value. Of course, it can not be formed simply from the age and cost of materials used. The thing must have an artistic value – an ugly chair, even if it was made 100 years ago, can not be antique.

There is another distinction between vintage and antique items, directly related to the age of the items – rarity. The rarity and, accordingly, the value of an antique thing is related to the fact that now it is impossible to just go and buy it. The reasons may be different: the technology is lost, and the brand ceases to exist, but as a result, the item can no longer be reproduced, and therefore becomes rare and antique. Not much time has passed since vintage items were made, so they are easier to acquire. But with each passing day, they will become rarer and therefore more expensive. A thing that today is vintage and relatively affordable, with time will move into the category of antiques, and its value will increase significantly. Therefore, antiques and vintage are an excellent investment.
