How to Style Parachute Pants?

by 顺之 聂 04 Mar 2024

If we had to name just one decade that defines fashion right now, it would be the noughties. A few seasons ago, 90's fashion came back to us: acid substances, loose hoodies. Some of these closet items are already firmly entrenched and integral, such as the banana bag. Low rise jeans, tank tops, and blue shades are actively worn not only by those who are nostalgic for the bright beginning of the century but even by members of Generation Z, who at the conscious age of zero did not even catch the zeroes.

Do designers draw inspiration from this era? Certainly the most notable ones! If you too are drawn to the aesthetics of the 00s, this trend will appeal to you: wide jeans are no longer wide enough - parachute pants are at the peak of popularity.

Last year, these pants made a swift comeback from 2002 and became the most coveted item in the closet of all Influencers, it-girls, and celebrities. Unlike the majority of trends that come back to us from the 00s, these loose-fit pants do not give up their positions. Last year, they garnered 1 billion views on TikTok and also peaked in Google Trends. The whole point is that it is impossible to imagine something as comfortable, practical, and versatile for every day.

In recent years they have suddenly become the favorite pants of style icons, famous singers, and public personalities who follow fashion. What are parachute pants, where did they come from why have they become so popular, and most importantly, what to wear them with - we tell and show in detail in our new review.

In search of an answer to the question: how to style parachute pants in summer 2024, we were inspired by the street-style images of the stars. We show and tell about the most stylish of them.

Wait, So What Exactly Are Parachute Pants?

Parachute pants, in their original form, were not at all as we know them today. It is even safe to say that they were the exact opposite of modern pieces. In the early 80's several companies simultaneously produced flight pants made of nylon, which were called "parachute pants". Yes, we know it's hard to believe, but the first they were nylon "slip-on" pants. Which, when you think about their original purpose, makes a lot more sense than it seems at first.

Flight pants in the original military style were never wide, they were always very narrow pants with a minimum of protruding and voluminous details. This is due to their purpose - in flight (be it an airplane or even more so a parachute) nothing should get in the way and cling to the slings. Parachute pants were called parachutes because of the use of nylon material with rip-stop reinforcement: similar material was used for parachutes at that time. The American denim brand Bugle Boys was the first to produce and sell these pants in the mass market in the early 80s.

Later, the fabric used for these loose fit pants became a little thinner, and when skateboarders and breakdancers took a closer look at parachute pants, the cut of these pants changed dramatically. Narrow pants were uncomfortable, but the fabric was literally perfect - it easily withstood all sorts of friction on the ground during the dance (hardly your usual pants cargo can withstand at least one attempt to drive on your knees on the ground). So, thanks to skaters and break dancers, we are already familiar with today with voluminous loose pants made of light fabric: nylon was replaced by lighter and more pleasant polyester, which, in addition, will not let you get wet during active movement.

What do today's popular parachute pants models look like? These pants for women are very wide pants made of thin fabric, with a belt or elastic band at the waist and always with an elastic band at the ankles. This style is reminiscent of Princess Jasmine's pants from the famous Disney cartoon. They can be made of any fabric, but the most common are thin "rain clothes". In the summer, they are very comfortable without being hot.

Sporty options and cargo pants with pockets are associated with cargo parachutes. The waistband of the 'parachute' can be designed like pants - with a belt or elastic band at the waist. The most popular are bright and saturated colors (crimson, blue, pink, yellow) or black and white models. There are also neutral shades to choose from, but if you want to be in trend, choose bright colors.

How to Wear Parachute Pants for a Chic Look?

Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber are especially fond of loose pants made of rustling fabric resembling a parachute: dozens of photos of models wearing parachutes can be found on the Internet, and they style them in different ways.

You can combine parachute pants with literally anything. If you need to make a simple, comfortable image, in which it will be comfortable to spend the whole day, add to the pants a simple T-shirt or T-shirt, your favorite sneakers and bring a hoodie in case the evening becomes cool. For fashionistas who are not afraid of experiments, we recommend wearing parachutes on the way out: with a seductive body with slits or even a blouse and your favorite sandals with heels. It's stylish, bold, and most importantly - very much in the spirit of the noughties.

With a "baby" T-shirt
This is another fashion element of the early noughties that has seen a resurgence in popularity recently. It is also known as a tiny t-shirt and is a cropped tight-fitting top. Since it was popular at the same time as parachute pants, these two outfits will be the perfect combination when creating a 2000's 2000s-style look. A "baby" t-shirt with a plaid print and heart-shaped decoration looks good with a black bottom. All-white sneakers, sporty sunglasses, and a large mesh bag complete the rest of the look.

With an oversized T-shirt
Parachute pants have an undeniable streetwear vibe that can be paired with a similarly baggy graphic t-shirt any time of the year. It is a good option for everyday wear. For example, an outfit consisting of dark blue pants and a white T-shirt with a blue graphic pattern looks interesting. Sporty sunglasses, spectacular earrings, and a variety of bracelets will be the perfect complement to the ensemble. When creating your look with parachute pants, you should consider experimenting with relatively large silhouettes to emphasize the design of the pants and the streetwear feel.

With bodysuits
The baggy shape of the parachute pants creates a balanced contrast with the tight-fitting style of the bodysuit. Thus, the combination creates a stylish, balanced look. For example, a blue-brown bodysuit looks good with green cargo pants. A cropped turtleneck, black Uggs, and a snakeskin bag complete the look. You can play with contrasts a bit to create a trendy look.

With corset
Parachute pants look good when combined with corset-style tops. This helps to create a super stylish look that can serve as an everyday outfit or a more glamorous evening wear option. Corset tops are spectacularly figure-hugging and beautifully emphasize the breasts. You can pair a black corset top with dark blue parachute pants and black and white sneakers.

The jacket
Loose, on-trend pants are unlikely to fit your office dress code, but that doesn't mean you can't wear a jacket with them at all. A blazer is the easiest way to make an outfit layered, so if you like business style in everyday life as well, parachutes can be a good alternative to classic pants. When choosing a jacket for them, pay attention to its size - it's very important not to go overboard with oversize because a baggy parachute pants combined with a voluminous blazer can weigh down the image.

Ladies in parachutes
Girls who prefer more classic and elegant images can also "play" with parachutes. We suggest killing two birds with one stone and complementing loose pants with ballet flats (yes, yes, you heard right). A daring trend from the 2000s and a delicate pair of shoes can be combined with a monochrome alcoholic T-shirt and a tweed jacket. In such an image it is better to avoid prints, so the most suitable option for summer will be an outfit in pastel shades. Unusual - and cool!

Animalistic print
Pairing parachute pants with a brightly patterned top is another way to style these pants. You can experiment a little with animalistic prints, as this combination will help to create a really fun look. For example, a zebra-patterned top and white fitted parachute pants look interesting. Black sandals, a silver handbag, and a black hijab complete the look.

Minimalistic style
If one wants the parachute pants to be the star of the outfit, then the rest of the look should be in a minimalist style. Since the pants are a spectacular and fashionable detail, they go well with simple stylish tops. For example, you can wear a black long-sleeved shirt, green loose-fit pants, and a pair of sneakers. The outfit is quite simple, but it has a special zest.

Shoes
Even though many people associate parachute pants with an oversized street look, it doesn't mean that you can't create a more elegant look with such pants.

But let's start again with the classics. Any sneakers, sneakers, or boots will complete the image with a final gesture. In colors, there are no restrictions, because it is already a matter of desire and the ability to combine. Do you want acidic? Then pick up to your image one more element of this shade and it will not look strange, but on the contrary unusual.

For a more sophisticated look, we suggest combining parachute pants with boat shoes or sandals, and you can put a blouse or a shirt on top. A clutch or any other small handbag will complete the look.

Parachute Pants: Styling Tips

Here are some ideas on how to look stylish in parachute pants. Modern versions of these pants are more statement-making. The material is so bold that we suggest sticking to simplicity on top of the look:

Wear the pants with your favorite corset top (like Madison Beer's in the photo above), or throw on a tight graphic T-shirt for a grunge look, or opt for a simple top in a neutral color.

If you want to achieve an understated look, let all your clothes be the same shade - black, white, or beige.

The classic look is parachute pants with a white tank top and your favorite comfy sneakers.

Although most TikTok videos show the pants being worn with a low waist, the adjustable drawstring means they can be worn with a high waist as well.

Don't be afraid of brightness. Pink is now in fashion, so buy parachute pants of this shade: choose models where there are not many pockets and flared details because the color speaks for itself. Make this look completely monochromatic.
