How to Shrink Jeans?

by LiWenshan 07 Feb 2024

Jeans are a basic item in the closet of any modern person, be it a man or a woman. They are comfortable and stylish, worn with almost any top and shoes. But it often happens that your favorite denim pants stretch because the fabric from which they are made changes its length and width parameters over time and loses elasticity. On the one hand, this is a plus. Many people buy jeans a size smaller than their own so that the jeans exactly match their figure. On the other hand, each washing stretches them again. This problem can affect any manufacturer's product, but much depends on the type of denim fabric. If you know how to shrink jeans at home, it may help you solve the problem.

Sometimes, there are situations when your favorite jeans become large or stretched in the process of wearing and no longer fit as well as before, but you do not want to throw them out. If you bought jeans and at home found that they are a little too big for you, do not be upset. Large-size jeans can be slightly reduced, unlike small things with which nothing can be done. How to Shrink Jeans: 5 Methods

Boiling them
At first, an extreme and emergency way to shrink jeans is to boil them. After such boiling, Jeans can slightly change in color - if this does not scare you, let's get started. First, prepare a metal basin, spoon, or a large pot suitable for your jeans. Pour water into the chosen container and put it on the stove. When the water boils, lower your jeans, previously turned inside out, into it. Keep your jeans in boiling water for about half an hour, stirring and turning the fabric regularly. Use wooden tongs for boiling laundry for this purpose. In the nineties, boiling jeans were fashionable; you probably have a house piled up similar tongs, which no one used for a long time. Afterward, you must take the boiled jeans out of a basin and transfer them to the washing machine. Put the machine on drying, choosing the highest number of revolutions per minute. Boiling is an aggressive procedure that allows you to reduce jeans size by several centimeters. And intensive drying will add to the result and shrink the jeans a little more.

Throw Jeans in the washing machine
Before making jeans shrink, check the pockets of the jeans so that they do not end up with money, documents, or important notes. Washing jeans with rhinestones, sequins, and embroidery in the washing machine is not recommended. The glue on the decorative elements can melt at high temperatures. In addition to the fact that jeans can be irretrievably damaged, such "beauty" can get into the filters and clog the washing machine. You will have to clean and even repair appliances. Also, the machine can not wash jeans with synthetic fibers. After all, machine washing is quite aggressive. The denim fabric is strong and sturdy - it will not do anything on shrinking jeans. But the synthetics can suffer and behave unpredictably - stretch or burst.

Machine washing is the safest and best way to shrink jeans. At what temperature do you wash to shrink jeans? For shrinkage in sizes 1-2, you should set the mode "Cotton" and a temperature of 80-90 0C. You should also choose the highest number of revolutions - 700-800. When washing, you should add powder and conditioner. Drying things should also be carried out in a horizontal position. Also, shrinkage will contribute to ironing wet jeans with an iron. IMPORTANT: This method can be used only on strong fabrics with at least 70% cotton composition. Otherwise, they will stretch even more before washing. You should carefully study the composition of the fabric and washing rules.

If you have fashionable jeans with torn edges or stylish holes, you can not wash them in the machine to shrink them. In this case, you will only get drab rags instead of jeans after washing. Such jeans should be washed specially. Just fold them so the outside is a strong fabric, and all the "fibers" remain inside. Place the jeans in a cloth bag and tightly tie the neck with a rope. Wash fashionable ripped jeans only in this way, even if you will shrink them. Put the clothes in the wash and set the maximum water heating temperature. As a rule, it is 90 degrees. If there is an intensive washing mode - put it out exactly. This will help to minimize the size of denim pants . Do not use powders with aggressive components or bleaches - the quality of denim fabric can deteriorate significantly.

Dry them
Aggressive hot air drying is another effective way to shrink jeans a couple of sizes quickly. After washing in hot water for an additional shrinking effect, use a dryer that is attached to the radiator (though the result will not be too promising), a hair dryer (but you need to make sure that the device is not overheated and not burned), a special drying machine or dryer function in the washing machine.

- The floor is covered with a dense cloth, and jeans are straightened and spread out on the fabric. The fabric will absorb all the excess water, and the jeans will retain shape.
- The hot drying mode is ideal for drying and shrinking the item.
- Hang a thin cloth on the radiator and lay the unfolded jeans on top, leaving them to dry completely.
- Place the wet jeans on an ironing board, cover them with gauze, and dry them with an iron.
- Hang the laundry on a rope before a heat source(radiator, heater, etc).
- Take the jeans to a laundromat and wash them so they will fit.

Temperature alternation
How can you make your jeans shrink if the fabric can only be washed by hand? You can arrange jeans and a so-called contrast shower. The thing should be rinsed in ice water and immediately put in hot water. Since you can not wash in boiling water by hand, leave the jeans in the water until their temperature is uncomfortable. If you have enough time, you can soak the jeans overnight in very cold water and wash them in hot water in the morning. With any method of fabric shrinkage, you should try to reduce the drying time of things as much as possible, as the wet material can stretch again. Consider a few ways that will help to dry jeans properly.

A sharp temperature change will help the fabric shrink, reducing the product. However, this method is suitable only for at least 70% cotton products.
- Wash the jeans. For this method of shrinking, jeans should be clean and slightly damp.
- Prepare two basins: one with ice water, the other with boiling water.
- Dip the jeans in hot water and soak for a few minutes.
- Transfer the product to cold water without wringing it out.
- Repeat the actions 3-5 times.
- Squeeze the product and send it to dry.

Get into Bath
To make jeans shrink in size, you need to fill a bathtub with hot water and immerse the product in it in a straightened form. If you add gel or laundry detergent to the water, you can solve two problems at once: launder stale dirt and shrink the size of jeans. After washing, dirty water is drained, the jeans are rinsed without taking them out of the bathtub, and hot water is poured back. As soon as the water cools down, the thing is wrung out and dried.

How Do You Shrink One Area on Jeans?

The methods described above help shrink jeans' size from all sides. However, they are unsuitable if the overall size is satisfactory, and removing the stretch in some areas is necessary. In this case, there is another way how you can shrink jeans on the size in the waist or hips - with the help of a sprayer:

- Fill the reservoir with warm water with conditioner, and shake the composition thoroughly.
- Spread the jeans on a table or ironing board.
- Spray the stretched area from the sprayer and dry quickly. You can do this with a hair dryer or an iron. In the latter case, you need to move the device from the edges to the center and not move on the fabric. Otherwise, the material will stretch even more.

This way, the rest of the problem areas are worked through individually. If everything is done correctly, but the result is not to your liking, the procedure will have to be repeated.
