Understanding Your Trench Coat's Fabric

Trenchcoat is not just outerwear, it is a symbol of style and sophistication. The popularity of this closet element has not faded for decades, and every season fashion houses offer new interpretations of the classic model.

Why is the trench coat so beloved? The answer is simple: it perfectly combines functionality and aesthetics. But for the trenchcoat to serve faithfully and truthfully, it is necessary to carefully approach the choice of fabric from which it is sewn. In this blog, we will consider ten actual models of trenchcoats and tell you what fabric is best to sew them from, so that the thing is not only beautiful but also practical.

The history of trenchcoats began in the early XX century when British officers wore them in the trenches of the First World War. The fabric for these coats was chosen as waterproof and lightweight so that soldiers could move comfortably. Since then, the trench coat has become a symbol of fearlessness and fortitude.

The importance of choosing the fabric
The choice of fabric for a trenchcoat is not only a matter of beauty. It is a question of convenience, practicality, and durability. After all, a good trench coat should protect you from wind and rain, be breathable, and at the same time keep its shape and color.

The right fabric for a trench coat is the one that can cope with your rhythm of life and the weather conditions of your region.

Gabardine
What is gabardine? Gabardine is a densely woven material, most often made from cotton or synthetic fibers. It is characterized by the oblique weave of the threads, which gives it extra strength and an interesting visual effect.

Why is gabardine ideal for trench coats?
Gabardine is not just beautiful to look at, it is practical. Thanks to its water-repellent and windproof properties, a gabardine trench coat will protect you in bad weather while still being breathable. The classic double-breasted coat with a belt looks perfect in light beige gabardine - it will add elegance to any look.

Technical fabrics
The next step in the evolution of trenchcoat fabrics is the use of modern technical fabrics. These fabrics have outstanding properties that make them ideal for protection against a wide variety of weather conditions. They may include synthetic fibers that provide improved waterproof and windproof performance while remaining lightweight and breathable.

Advantages of technical fabrics
Due to their unique structure, these fabrics are able to repel water, allow air to pass through, and wick away moisture, making them a great choice for active lifestyles. Windproof properties are also highly valued during the spring and fall seasons.

Wool
Wool is a classic that never goes out of style, especially when it comes to trench coats. Warm and stylish, wool trenchcoats are the perfect choice for cold weather. Wool has natural insulating properties, making it a great choice for winter and fall trench coats. Wool is also moisture-wicking, making it comfortable to wear even in wet weather.

The choice of wool for trenchcoats can range from fine merino wool to thick and warm cashmere wool. Each type of wool adds different characteristics to your trench coat, from luxurious and soft to durable and resistant to wear and tear. One of the win-win options for wool outerwear fabric is Covercoat.

Model example: Long trench coat made of wool and cashmere mix. An elegant cold-weather option that provides warmth and comfort. It is often made in rich colors such as deep blue or burgundy, which adds sophistication to the look.

Wool trenchcoats are a combination of comfort and elegance, making them an essential element of a winter closet. They can be both fully classic and embellished with modern design elements. Single-breasted trench coat made of soft cashmere wool with added silk, which adds sophistication and additional insulation.

Blended fabrics
Blends of linen with linen, wool with silk, linen with viscose, and other blended mixes can be alternative or deliberately chosen materials for sewing a trenchcoat. The most important thing in such fabrics, so that they fit all their properties to the chosen model of trench coat. Pay attention to the density of the fabric, its form stability, and plasticity.

Washing a Trench Coat: A Comprehensive Guide

The trench coat is easy to care for during wear. It is only important to avoid stubborn dirt. Much will depend on the material of the garment. If it is eco-leather, then wet wipes will cope with any problem easily and simply. With fabric, versions are more difficult, for example, splashes from puddles will have to be cleaned immediately, and you may need a small brush.

Is it possible to wash a trench coat?
As a rule, no. Classic coats are made of dense fabric, so not every washing machine drum can withstand such a volume of work such washing products can deform, as well as lose a presentable appearance and saturated color. As an exception, machine washing can be subjected to trench coats made of synthetic materials. Products made of polyester are more practical, they adequately tolerate repeated washing. In any case, before washing it is necessary to study the label on the clothes.

Is it possible to wash a trench coat at home?
You have probably heard that these coats calmly survive a couple of hours in the washing machine. We strongly disagree with this. First of all, if you are lucky enough to get a classic model (for example, Burberry), then you will confirm that the trench coat is quite heavy. Not any drum will be able to withstand such a volume of work. Secondly, in the washing machine, the trench coat will be treated unevenly, and some stains will remain on the fabric or will be even more absorbed into the material. Third, after such care, the trench coat can lose color, deform, and tear. We doubt that you are ready to stay without appliances and outerwear.

There are, of course, exceptions. This applies to models that are made of synthetic fabrics. The labels of trench coats indicate what kind of washing is suitable for them: machine, manual, or no washing at all. Variants of polyester are lighter than their classical counterparts, so they are unlikely to damage the drum. And besides, artificial materials survive mechanical care better than natural ones.

How to clean small dirt?
This applies to stains that can be removed with a dry brush. If the dirt is absorbed, however, we do not advise cleaning it at home. Trench coats are made of cotton fabric, so colored liquids can stain the coat, and oil - leave a greasy trace. In this case, even water-repellent impregnation will not save from pollution.

*️⃣Wool trench coat
How do you wash trench coats in this case? Will the process become more complicated? The combination of the two materials makes the raincoat practical, allowing you to wear it even in the cold fall. Wool helps to keep it warm and soft, while polyester adds durability, and reduces shrinkage and the risk of creasing.

It is recommended to wash the trench coat as little as possible, otherwise, it will lose its original appearance: lint may appear and it will lose its shape.

Wash by hand or in the “delicate washing” mode. The water temperature should not exceed 35 degrees. Use special products designed for washing wool. To preserve the original properties of the garment, use a fabric conditioner. Set the minimum spin cycle and do not subject the raincoat to unnecessary pressure.

Hang the clean garment on a rack over a basin or bathtub. If you dry your clothes in this way, they will retain their stylish appearance.

*️⃣Polyester trench coat
Manufacturers usually recommend dry cleaning only, as polyester is very sensitive to external influences. Nevertheless, people still try to clean it on their own. Different cleaning methods can be used, but in each case, you need to follow the rules.

Polyester can be washed in a washing machine. If you have enough time, perform this process by hand. Dial water, slightly warm, and wash. Remember: the laundry detergent must be suitable for synthetic materials such as polyester. Dirt comes off polyester quickly, so there is no need to wash the raincoat for a long time. In any case, performing this procedure by hand is a hassle, so give preference to a modern washing machine.

How to wash a trench coat in a washing machine?
The optimal program is “Synthetics” or “Delicate washing”. When choosing the appropriate program, the machine will set the appropriate parameters, which will increase the chances of success. The recommended washing temperature is 30 degrees. Spin should be carried out at minimum speed, otherwise you can damage the seams or the fabric itself. For washing, choose universal means or means specially designed for synthetic materials. For light or dark coverings, use powders specifically designed for colored fabrics. For effective washing, use a conditioner that will improve the properties of the material and give additional softness. Additional rinsing will help to successfully remove detergent residues.

The trench coat should not be twisted or crumpled, otherwise you can spoil its shape. This recommendation is very important because unnecessary actions can spoil the result. Hang the raincoat on a drying rack. This option will keep the shape of the product.

Ironing is not recommended. But if you still want the trench coat to retain its original appearance, choose the lowest temperature. Use a cloth. This procedure should correspond to the ironing of products made of silk. A manual steamer will allow you to iron your coat in a minimum of time.
