Hand Washing or Machine Washing?

Before washing, one of the most important things is to choose the right way of washing. That is to say, we need to clarify whether we need to hand wash them or machine wash them. This is because many fabrics, such as some types of wool, are not suitable for machine washing. In addition, clothes containing down are also not suitable for machine washing, as this will cause the down filling in the down jacket to clump and be unevenly distributed. So we need to clarify which way is more appropriate to wash these clothes above all. Then how can we know?

First we need to figure out what these white clothes are made of. Whether a piece of clothing is suitable for machine washing is often determined by the fabric. It is a well-known fact that silk and wool clothes are not suitable for machine washing. Because silk is soft and has poor wear resistance, so is easily damaged by the strong agitation of the washing machine. The wool fiber is also easy to be destroyed by the machine washing, so woolen clothes are also not suitable for machine washing. Moreover, white clothes with delicate embroidery or sequins are also more fragile. So it is recommended that those white clothes washed by hand. Generally speaking, fabrics such as cotton and polyester are more suitable for machine washing.

Besides, dirty clothes with some special stains cannot be machine washed either. For example, clothes stained by alcohol and other flammable liquids may corrode the washing machine or even react with the electric sparks generated during the operation of the washing machine to cause an explosion. Therefore, for the sake of life safety, this kind of clothes should still be washed by hand.

In order to have a more comprehensive understanding of the taboos in the clothing washing process, it is better to read the labels on the clothes carefully before washing. Often these labels will indicate the specific fabrics of the clothing, appropriate washing method and water temperature, etc. If possible, machine washing is of course the first choice, because it can save a lot of time and energy. However, if the label clearly states that it cannot be machine washed, then in order to protect the clothes, you have to choose hand washing.

For white clothes with special stains, you need to deal with the stains before putting them into the washing machine. Special laundry detergent can be used. You can also soak the clothes in water added with baking soda for a few hours before washing to keep them soft and make them easier to be cleaned.

How to Avoid Staining White Clothes While Washing?

Another thing that can easily happen when washing white clothes is staining. This happens no matter using machine to wash or hand wash. So how can we avoid staining white clothes while washing them? How to recover them if we accidentally stain the white clothes?

The most effective way to prevent staining is of course to wash white clothes separately, and not wash or soak them together with other colored clothes. Even light-looking colors like light blue and light pink should not be allowed. It is worth noting that sometimes you will find that even if you did not wash white clothes with other colored clothes, the white clothes are still stained. This could be because there is some dye left over from colored clothing you washed in the washing machine before. So before washing white clothes, it is better to do a self-cleaning to ensure that there is no residual dye in the washing machine drum.

But no matter how careful we are, white clothes are easily to be stained, or the stains cannot be completely washed off. So in these cases, we need to bleach the white clothes. But many types of bleach are harsh on clothes, as evidenced by their pungent smell. So bleach cannot be used frequently. For some white clothes that are not stained very seriously, we can choose some safe, harmless, cheap and easily available things instead of bleach. For example, you can mix starch, citric acid, and salt and add it to water or apply it to the stain and then soak the clothing. This also has a good cleaning effect. For some white clothes that are seriously stained or dyed, you can consider putting them in a stainless steel pot and adding clean water to boil. High temperature is also conducive to cleaning stains.

And remember, wash white clothing as soon as possible after it is stained or dyed. The shorter the time between staining and cleaning, the easier it will be to remove the stain.

How to Dry White Clothes?

After finally washing your white clothes and making sure they were not stained during the wash, you breathe a sigh of relief. But do not get excited too early! Cleaning white clothes requires your constant attention and vigilance, because even when they are hung out to dry, they can still be stained!

Do not hang wet white clothes next to other colored clothes. If you do this, you will find that the white clothes are stained by other colored clothes again. So the correct approach is to dry white clothes separately after hand or machine washing, just like in the washing process.

By now you have probably remembered that you can not hang white clothes out to dry with clothes of other colors. Indeed, after you dried the white clothes, you found that they were not stained. However, you found that the white clothes were obviously yellowed. Maybe you would suspect that the stain is not cleaned completely, so you wash it again, and then find that the white clothes have become more yellowed. In fact, this kind of yellow color is not caused by stains, but by exposing your white clothes directly to the sun. Maybe now you have understood why your neighbors always cover their shoes with a layer of paper towel after brushing them and then put them out to dry. This is indeed a good way to prevent white shoes from turning yellow after washing, but we can not cover all white clothes with a layer of paper towels before hanging them out to dry.

Therefore, it is best to hang white clothes in a cool and ventilated place to dry. Using a dryer is not a good option as the high temperature may leave burn marks on white clothes. If you have to use a dryer because the environment is humid and clothes dried in the shade will have a musty smell, then make sure your white clothes are suitable for the dryer before using it and choose a lower temperature. At the same time, do not use chlorine bleach to bleach white clothes frequently. Although the clothes can be whitened for a short period of time, they will soon turn yellow again due to the damage caused by chlorine.

How to Care for White Clothes?

After cleaning and drying, everything is still not fine. The storage and maintenance are still very important for white clothes. If you do not pay attention to this step, then it is very likely that after a period of time, when you need to wear this white clothe again, you will find that the white clothe that were cleaned have turned yellow again. So what can we do to make them maintain white?

Do not iron white clothes at too high a temperature to avoid burn marks. Or you can also use an extra layer of fabric between the clothe you want to iron and the iron.

If you will not wear your white clothes for a relatively long period, it is better to put them in a clean plastic bag and seal it before putting them in your closet. Otherwise, the accumulated dust in your closet will cause your white clothes to become dirty or yellow again, even if you have never taken them out of your closet. In addition, you can insert a few pieces of white paper between the white clothes, which will help prevent the clothes from turning yellow and can absorb moisture to keep the clothes dry.

Finally, when wearing the white clothes, you need to be especially careful. When enjoying your meal, try to cover white clothes with napkins. This can reduce the number of times white clothes need to be cleaned and extend their service life from the source.

Turning the white clothes inside out before washing will help protect the fabric and keep it white for much longer. It is also a simple step that will reduce the risk of color fading.
