What is Worsted Wool?

von Shunzhi Nie 17 Sep 2024

Worsted wool is combed sheep's wool for making soft, smooth materials. The fibers used are particularly strong, ranging from 8 to 24 cm long, which gives it greater silkiness and durability. Depending on the density of the fabric, it is used to make dresses, suits, and coats.

In the production of worsted materials, yarns made of homogeneous dyed fibers are used. Before spinning carefully combed on a combing machine, rejecting too long or short hairs. The surface is sheared to make it smoother.

The worsted fabric is produced by the following weaves:

1. The plain weave is the simplest and strongest. The weft and warp threads alternate through one in the form of a checkerboard, so that the fabric has no front and back sides. This method is used to make cloth and suit and dress fabrics, as well.

2. Large-patterned - a complex type of weaving, that consists of 2 or more threads, creating a relief pattern on the surface. Suitable for sewing coats and jackets.

3. Fine-patterned weave is divided into two types:

- derivatives - these are complicated simple weaves: cornet, rep, twill. Dress and costume fabrics are made by this method;

- combined weaves include ornamental, crepe, diagonal, and relief weaves. Dresses, suits, and coats are made from materials woven by the combined method.

The best material for the cold season is considered to be natural wool. Clothing made of woolen fabrics is comfortable to wear because of its ability to retain heat. Unlike other types, it is pleasant to the body and does not wrinkle. Dense wool fabric is used in the creation of a variety of clothes. It can be worn for a business look and to create a casual style. You should choose quality wool to always look stylish.

Scottish wool has exceptional characteristics that depend on the type. There are such varieties:

· Merino wool is characterized by warmth and softness. This valuable wool is more expensive than ordinary fabric, but it looks more presentable and sits well on the body.

· Sheep's wool is the most common wool fabric and is popular because of its warp resistance and durability.

· Angora is a soft wool fabric that is sheared from angora rabbits. It is soft to the touch and comfortable to wear. Its only drawback is that it is delicate to care for. Also, the fabric should not be wet cleaned.

· Cashmere is characterized by expensive. It is not wear-resistant, but it looks stylish and does not wrinkle. Pure cashmere is difficult to find because it is mixed with other materials to obtain durable things.

· Fine woolen alpaca fabric is considered the warmest of all types. It is from it that expensive Scottish suits are made. They make the appearance irresistible and keep you warm in winter.

· Vigon is obtained from the shearing of camels. Usually, the material is collected by hand, which explains its value and costliness. That is why finding such wool is great luck, as it is very rare. A coat or jacket made of this fabric can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Natural wool differs not only in appearance but also in the way it is spun. It is divided into cloth wool and worsted wool. From the first type, coats and jackets are produced mainly because of the increased density. And from worsted is created most men's suits. For office work, there is nothing better than woolen things. They can be combined with any style and always look different.

A little history on worsted wool

Wool is a large group of fabrics of natural origin, the source of which is animal fiber. Wool in pure form or worsted wool is widely used for the production of winter closet fabrics, dress fabrics, suit fabrics, and knitwear. The main specificity of wool is that it retains heat perfectly.

Ever since man was able to tame goats and sheep, raw materials for worsted wool production have been readily available - wool and felt were used by the most ancient civilizations. Before scissors were invented, raw materials were extracted with combs or by hand. Some archaeological excavations indicate that wool was known as far back as 1500 BC. Wool fibers from wild goats have been found in prehistoric caves in the Republic of Georgia and date as far back as 34000 BC!

In the times of ancient Rome, wool, along with leather and linen, was popular in Europe. In the records of Pliny, the Elder it is noted that the best reputation of wool producers was considered to be the inhabitants of Tarenta, where due to special care they bred sheep with excellent wool.

In the Middle Ages, the wool trade became a serious business and the main generator of capital formation. The importance of wool for the development of the English economy is evidenced by the fact that from the XIY century, the presiding officer of the House of Lords sat on a “wool sack” - a chair “stuffed” with wool.

How to care for worsted wool?

Since worsted wool or semi-woolen fabrics belong to the dress , suit, and coat groups, as the name suggests, they are most often used for sewing these garments. Coats, suits, and dresses are available in various textures, raw materials, and finishes. In the sale, there are purely woolen, blended things. Their differences allow you to pick up a coat or dress at a favorable price or composition. Blended variations of worsted fabrics are not as prickly and irritating as purely woolen products. Semi-wool is worn longer, retaining its original look and shape. It is less prone to puffs and pilling. The care of semi-sheer wool is less labor intensive than washing and drying wool products.

Care for most products sewn from worsted fabrics is reduced to dry cleaning, as wool does not tolerate contact with water. Semi-wool, if there are recommendations from the manufacturer, can be washed at home. To do this, you can use a washing machine, delicate washing mode or mode for wool, heating water 30 degrees Celsius. Pressing is most often used manually with the help of absorbent fabrics, dry worsted fabrics naturally in a straightened form horizontally. The most resistant things made of cloth or gabardine can be safely washed in the machine for a full cycle. These varieties of worsted fabrics are very durable, especially if they contain synthetics.

The main advantage of worsted fabrics is heat retention, which is why wool and semi-wool fabrics are so popular, even despite their main disadvantage - the need for careful care and high price.

How to Style a Worsted Wool Blazer?

A worsted wool blazer is a versatile and timeless piece that can elevate any outfit. Whether you’re dressing for a business meeting or a casual weekend event, knowing how to style this essential garment can make a significant difference in your overall appearance. With its sleek texture and rich color, a worsted wool blazer offers a polished look that can be adapted to various occasions. Here’s how to master the art of styling this classic piece.

1. Choose the Right Fit

Ensure the blazer fits you well. It should be tailored to hug your shoulders and chest without being too tight. The length should be such that it covers your posterior when your arms are relaxed at your sides.

2. Select the Color and Pattern

A classic navy or charcoal grey worsted wool blazer is versatile and can be dressed up or down. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, consider a plaid or windowpane pattern, which adds visual interest.

3. Pair with the Right Pants

Match the blazer with well-fitting trousers in a similar color family for a sophisticated look. For a more casual vibe, pair it with dark-wash jeans or chinos.

4. Choose the Right Shirt

A crisp white or light blue dress shirt is a safe bet. For a more relaxed look, try a patterned shirt, but ensure the pattern complements the blazer.

5. Accessorize Wisely

Opt for elegant pieces that complement the formality of the blazer. A simple necklace, a pair of stud earrings, or a delicate bracelet can add a touch of sophistication.

Choose a handbag that matches the style of the blazer. A structured tote or a sleek clutch in a complementary color or texture can enhance the look.

6. Footwear Selection

For a formal setting, pair the blazer with dress shoes such as oxfords, brogues, or derbies. For a casual look, loafers or monks can work well.

7. Layering

In cooler weather, layer a v-neck sweater or a crew-neck sweater underneath the blazer for added warmth and style.

For a more casual layering option, try a button-down shirt with a crew-neck t-shirt underneath.

8. Outerwear

If you need to wear an overcoat, choose one that is slightly longer than the blazer. A topcoat or a trench coat can work well.

9. Final Touches

Add a watch and a pair of cufflinks to enhance the sophistication of your outfit. If the occasion calls for it, consider a pair of suspenders instead of a belt for a vintage touch.
