What is Rayon Fabric?

par XiaoBo 05 Sep 2024

Rayon is a fiber of natural origin, invented by a French scientist at the end of the 19th century. And before him, the Englishman Robert Hook tried to create a material of this type. Mass production of the material was launched in the 19th century, it was then that rayon fabric became very popular because of its universal properties.

Characteristics and properties of the material depend on the production technology. It is produced from wood by splitting it into the cellulose element - xanthogenate. And some more time the composition is boiled, reacting with an aqueous solution of calcium.

The resulting homogenized composition is transformed into yarns that make up rayon fabric. Slightly changing the specifications, polyethylene is produced, so rayon is often called a natural synthetic. It is an unnatural fabric created from cellulose.

Types of Rayon

Fabric fibers are divided into silk , staple, and cord rayon. Silk is used for quilts and bedding. Staple is used for sewing warm clothes, and it is also used to make plaids and carpets. Corded yarns are used to make elite clothing. Among other things, the base of the fabric is combined with natural threads of other materials, and then rayon adopts a number of their properties and qualities.

1. Rough crepe is obtained with the help of twisted rayon yarns. Things made of it turn out beautiful and spectacular in appearance. The fabric is characterized by high durability.

2. Cold rayon is a knitted or staple fabric with a good ability to stretch, that is, stretch.

3. Modal - the fabric is made from 100% cellulose fibers without the addition of harmful impurities and chlorine. Due to the special weave of fibers, the fabric is endowed with many qualities of cotton. It is used for women's, men's, and children's clothing and bedding.

How can you wash, dry and iron rayon?

Rayon is an easily dyed, static-free fiber made from wood pulp. Rayon is also called “artificial silk”. Its high absorbency (rayon absorbs 13% of moisture compared to 8% for cotton) and depth of color allow it to be dyed in bright, shining hues but also means it requires delicate washing. Read the guide to find out how to do it!

Washing clothes made of rayon

1.Always follow the care recommendations on the label. Rayon is usually very fragile, but sometimes it can still be machine-washed. And, at the same time, some rayon clothing should not be washed. In order not to tear your favorite piece, so that it doesn't get watered down or ruined, always follow the recommendations on the label of the garment. Although this part contains instructions for hand and automatic washing of rayon clothing, they should be taken as general recommendations and not as a universal rule. In other words, always prioritize the care instructions on the garment label over this article.

2.Hand washing in cold water. If the instructions on the label say that the garment can be washed, it's always best to do it by hand rather than in a washing machine. Rayon clothing becomes incredibly fragile when wet, so gentle hand washing is not as dangerous as vigorous agitation in the washing machine drum. Put rayon clothes in cool water and add hand detergent. Wash gently: rub the soap foam into the garment and massage it without making rough movements. Never twist, wring, or squeeze rayon garments - these are not the right ways to get rid of excess moisture. Instead, gently shake off the excess moisture.

3.Machine wash with garments made of similar material. If you are confident that your rayon garment will not be damaged by machine washing, make sure that only similarly delicate materials will be in this load. Tougher fabrics (such as denim) can snag rayon during the wash, stretching and tearing it. For added safety, use cold water and a delicate wash setting.

4.Alternatively, you can use a mesh bag to protect your clothes. Another option to protect your rayon while washing in the machine is to put all of your rayon clothing in a mesh bag. This will keep the delicate fabric from mixing with the rest of your clothes, thus eliminating the major risks of it tearing.

5.Hang to dry. When the rayon garments have been washed, take each garment out individually and shake them gently to remove excess moisture. Smooth out any creases with your hands. Then hang to dry on non-metallic hangers (metal can leave rust stains). Alternatively, you can dry your clothes on a clothes dryer or lay them out to dry on a clean, flat surface.

6.Do not use electric dryers. In addition to all the problems that come with machine washing (intense agitation of the clothes, etc.), electric dryers are also notorious for causing rayon to shrink and wear out disastrously fast. If you can avoid electric drying of rayon clothes, we recommend that you do so. If not, set the temperature to the lowest setting and only dry rayon garments in large batches.

7.Iron rayon only from the back of the garment. Never place the iron on the front of the garment - this can burn and melt the fibers and the garment will develop an unattractive “sheen” that cannot be removed. Always turn the garment inside out before using the iron. For reassurance, iron rayon when it is slightly damp. If you need to iron the garment from the front, put some fabric between the hot surface of the iron and the rayon to protect it.

Washing rayon mats

1.Wash the mat only if it is absolutely necessary for you. Rayon fibers are very fragile and tend to shed. For these reasons, the usual attempt to clean the rug may just end up ruining it. If you have sentimental feelings for this rayon rug and it is more than just a rug to you, it is better to have it cleaned by professionals (dry cleaning) than to risk irreparable damage (it may also shed) by trying to clean it yourself.

2.Shake the rug outdoors. When cleaning rayon rugs, you have a primary goal: maximum cleanliness with minimum moisture. Therefore, before applying liquid detergents, it's wise to try cleaning it in ways that don't require you to wet it. Take the carpet outside and give it a good shake to eliminate debris and dust. For more intensive cleaning, you can hang the rug on a railing or some sort of rung and shake it out.

3.Vacuum the carpet. Then use a vacuum cleaner to remove any embedded dirt and sediment. Vacuum the carpet several times in the direction of the fibers and against them, paying special attention to dirty areas. If possible, use a vacuum cleaner attachment that does not have a mechanical brush. Rayon is very fragile and mechanical impact with a stiff brush can easily tear it.

4.Make sure that the carpet will stay securely in place when you clean it. If the carpet is still dirty, you will need to wash it gently. Secure the rug to a table that you don't mind getting dirty while you clean it, or place a waterproof oilcloth on the floor. To get a rayon rug cleaned well, you'll need to rub it, and you don't want it to slip on the floor, and you certainly don't want paint dripping off of it and staining the floor next to it.

5.Use a soft washcloth, soap and water. Mix warm water with a few drops of carpet cleaner to make a cleaning solution. Use a soft-tipped brush (like those used to clean windows) to rub the solution into the problem areas. Do not use stiff pile brushes or mechanical brushes - they can easily tear the fragile rayon fibers of the carpet. Be moderate with the washing liquid: the less moisture, the less danger of the carpet watering. It is wise to test the detergent solution on a small area of the carpet that will not be visible before applying it to the entire carpet. Before you start cleaning, you need to understand if your cleaning solution will cause the dye to run off the carpet.

6.To minimize yellowing, wash it with vinegar. Cellulose fibers (including rayon) will yellow when wet. To minimize unattractive yellowing, gently dab wet parts of the carpet with a mixture of water and vinegar. The acetic acid will prevent severe yellowing when the carpet dries, although it may not remove the yellowing completely.

7.Vacuum again. To remove as much moisture as possible from the carpet, vacuum a second time after you have finished using the liquid cleaner. Pay special attention to the wet areas of the carpet. As mentioned above, you should avoid using attachments with mechanical brushes. This will prevent damage to the carpet.

8.Alternatively, you can spray the carpet with diluted fabric softener. When the carpet dries, the fibers can clump together in clumps, creating stains and splotches in the carpet. To prevent this, you can gently spray the carpet with a mixture of water and fabric softener from a spray bottle. This will prevent the fibers from getting stiffer, piling up, and turning into horrible clumps. And yet, you may still need to break up the sticky fibers after the rug dries. Do this carefully, with your hands.

9.Dry face down. Drying your rug face down reduces the yellowing that occurs when wet rayon dries out. Place your rayon rug in a clean, dry place or hang to dry. However, keep in mind that the reverse side of the rug, on the contrary - will become more yellow.

10.Do not place the rug on or near other rugs until it is completely dry. As mentioned above, rayon is notorious for its ability to leak and shed when wet. Therefore, you should keep your wet carpet away from light-colored fabrics (especially expensive rugs) until it is completely dry. It is very difficult to get dye stains out of carpeting and impossible to get dye drips on the carpet itself.
