What to Wear to the Opera?

by Shunzhi Nie 06 Jun 2024

Theater is an art and should be respected. For a long time, it was a pleasure not available to everyone and part of bohemian life. Ladies went out not only to enjoy Shakespeare's opera performance but also to show themselves off.

Theater of the XXI century has changed and adjusted to modern cultural trends, trends, fashion. Playbills abound with an abundance of genres and formats - from classical to the most avant-garde. Despite some changes, it has managed to retain its traditionalism, and cultural heritage. As before, the opera performance remains a real holiday for connoisseurs. The tradition of dressing up for the opera has survived to this day. Going to a performance is an important event for those who are just getting acquainted with this fascinating genre of art.

Today our world is becoming more and more democratic, and a millionaire in sneakers, jeans, and a T-shirt is no longer a surprise to anyone. Today the theater has become more loyal to the appearance: spectacular evening dresses appear in the foyer less and less often, and more and more often we prefer more casual looks. How to find a balance between "too flashy" and "too casual"? But how to dress for the opera, what outfit will be appropriate, and what is better to avoid. Let's try to deal with these questions.

A Brief History of Opera Fashion

The history of opera fashion and the dress code goes back many centuries. In times when the theater was considered entertainment for representatives of the nobility, socialite ladies and gentlemen attended performances not only for the enjoyment of art.

Going out was an occasion to show themselves and look at others. Therefore, ladies dressed up in the most exquisite outfits chose expensive accessories. Men wore suits in accordance with the latest fashion trends. To come in an evening dress, which was relevant in the previous season, was considered bad taste, a sign that the host's business was not going well. Communication before the performance and during the intermission was as active as possible. New acquaintances, matchmaking, gossip - all this is an important part of social life. And a fashionable beautiful dress was a business card, the best way to attract attention.

After all, at that time going to the theater for the opera was a real deal. First, the event was almost the only reason to dress up nicely. Secondly, the theater environment, which reigned marble, gold moldings, huge crystal chandeliers, and velvet chairs, pushed visitors to the appropriate clothing. Therefore, the image of going to the theater could not be ordinary. The everyday closet is simply inappropriate. The fashion and unwritten rules of the theater dress code are still in effect today. Elegant and strict clothing is a sign of good tone and compliance with theater etiquette.

Is There an Opera Dress Code?

Trends are constantly changing: old rules are no longer valid, and new aesthetics are emerging. Attitudes to many things are becoming more democratic. And that's why conservatism is not in fashion today. The theater has also become different. It has adjusted to the diversity of life and has ceased to be the only solemn occasion for going out in evening gowns. Opera is no longer a social event where people of the same social circle gather. Therefore, the attitude to clothes has changed.

The repertoire in the theater has also changed. Some are committed to the classics, while others experiment not only with new pieces but also with the interior, refusing stucco, gold, and crystal decor. In addition, the accelerated rhythm of life does not always allow time to change clothes for a cultural event, to prepare for going to the ballet according to traditional etiquette. Therefore, many stylists believe that it is not necessary to look for a tuxedo and a fancy dress to get out to your favorite production. First of all, respect for the actors should be shown through the behavior of the audience: no phones on, no rustling in the bag, and so on.

Today, dressing for a visit to the theater is a relatively formal look, closer to the office dress code. If in the past, sneakers were not worn to the office, then they had no place at a cultural event. However, the situation has changed. Sneakers are combined with dresses, pants formal suits. Therefore, for a cultural event comfortable shoes will not be under the ban. Sports suits and backpacks are still taboo. They are left for classes in the gym and walks in the park. A universal option is to wear a trapeze, trouser set, long-sleeved top, blouse, or shirt. Floor-length dresses with open shoulders, stiletto shoes, tuxedos, and bow ties are an option for opera premieres and gala concerts.

What a Woman Should Wear to the Opera?

So, the day has come when you have decided to attend a play or an opera. But what to go in? To begin with, you should decide on the outfits that are not welcome at theater events. This is any denim clothes, shorts, T-shirts with open shoulders, tunics, mini skirts, tracksuits and shoes, flip-flops and Uggs.

For the image of the opera you need to choose:
floor-length dress;
midi dress;
pantsuit.

If the opera outfit is selected as a combination of pants and a blouse, the bottom should be dark, and the top - white. The shoes will fit neat loafer shoes. If there are problems with the legs, it is uncomfortable to walk in narrow shoes, you should give preference to more comfortable models on a low heel and with a comfortable pad. You should not forget about the hairstyle. It is not necessary to go to the hairdresser for a new haircut. You can limit yourself to a neat styling.

The image will also depend on what kind of production you are going to attend.

Opera, ballet. Opera and ballet productions are large-scale events that amaze with splendor. And the outfit here should correspond. Appropriate long evening dresses, and elegant pantsuits. Bulky costume jewelry and large jewelry should be abandoned. Jewelry should be elegant, without pretentiousness.

Dramatic theater. In this case, the dress code is less strict. Often people go to watch performances after work. Therefore, formal clothing is allowed: classic images, diluted with discreet accessories, and jewelry.

Modern, experimental theater. Despite the novelty of the direction, the rules of etiquette remain the same. The image can be less dressy, but classic, and neat. Jeans, sneakers, and T-shirts are inappropriate here.

Appearance directly depends on what kind of event you are going to. The general rule for all - is no jeans, sports, or beach style.

Fancy Outfit Ideas for a Night at the Opera

Going to the opera is still a more formal and solemn event than going to the theater. If the bar of requirements to the outfit for theatergoers has already been lowered, taking into account the modern rhythm of life, when people come to the performance immediately after work, the opera is still an elitist story. What to wear there on the way out to look appropriate?

A cocktail dress with a sleeve
The requirement to come in an evening dress is a thing of the past. Although some opera events can still look like the Oscars. But nowadays, an elegant cocktail dress will suffice. Elegance for opera is expensive fabrics and luxurious textures, it is midi length, it is discreet neutral, nude, and pastel shades, refusal of prints. You can complement the outfit with a small clutch, a shoulder bag on a chain, discreet jewelry, and exquisite loafers.

Stylish pants
Wide pants have deservedly become a hit of the season. Despite the bulkiness, they emphasize the fragility of the figure and create a beautiful silhouette. Choose denim or corduroy full-length and start combining: it with a monochrome silky blouse, classic shirt, turtleneck, or white T-shirt. Put on a long jacket - and a serious set for the office is ready. And then just take off the jacket, add large jewelry, and spend a dressy evening in the theater.

You can give preference to classic palazzos with a fitted top, creating the effect of graceful draping. The main thing is not to make a mistake with the color. Black, cream, pastel blue, and dark green are win-win options for opera outfits.

The classic dress
An evening dress is the obvious choice wearing to opera. Both in the office and at the premiere will look like a good laconic model with midi length and minimal decoration. The ideal variant is with a polo collar, including a shirt dress. Elegant accents, such as a stylish print on the fabric or draping on the skirt, will tell about the relevance of the image. Colors we choose restrained because there are decorations for glitter. Complete the set with a yellow, jade, or other light coat. It will tell more about your style than the most elegant dress.

Opera looks with a skirt
The skirt should be chosen straight cut, below the knee length. This is all the wishes for a business and festive skirt at the same time. It can be made of eco-friendly leather, velvet, corduroy, and even satin with an actual animalistic print. It is most successful to combine the skirt with a solid-colored turtleneck of dense knitwear, as well as a sweater with a bright print or textured braids. Remember the trends of the season and boldly choose models with plenty of fringes. In addition, you can give free rein to your imagination and experiment with the palette: brown, pastel pink, classic camel, orange, and green - fashionable fall trends give you room for creativity.

Stylish layering
Coats and jackets are suitable for business and festive occasions, now it's the turn of the cardigan and eco coat. With a cardigan everything is obvious: choose a noticeable, long, and with actual details. A stylish lightweight jacket will be appropriate and with mules with heels if you feel so comfortable. The plus of an eco-friendly fur coat is that it turns a restrained office image into a trendy and original one. Which one to choose? Maxi, midi, or oversize. In pastel colors or with non-standard patterns. The main wish is not to tighten the silhouette.

Add on: bright details
Complete the festive and business style for your opera outfits with special footwear. We prefer serious loafers, elegant flat-soled shoes, playful mules with a square toe, and a shot glass heel or booties. The secret of the perfect pair is that it will be comfortable and relevant not only in the office and theater but also the whole fashionable day.
