What Is Blokecore?

by Shunzhi Nie 18 Jul 2024

The introduction of sporty elements into fashion is not a new story. What used to be called sport-chic (or athleisure) background is present in our closets, it seems, regardless of trends. This summer, even those who are far from physical activity have changed into sportswear. One of the leading trends for the warm season of 2024 is the blokecore style. Have you heard of blokecore? No? But this social media trend has been popular for several seasons now - and is quietly making its way to the top of the key trends! So it's worth getting to know it.

Actually, blokecore is nothing new. Comfortable clothes - tracksuits, oversized T-shirts, and sneakers which have long ceased to be associated only with rappers and sports fans. The name came from the English words bloke (“guy” in colloquial language) and core (designation of style directions). The concept: creating images inspired by the uniforms of soccer fans. It was talked about in late 2022. Then the images in this aesthetic were inspired by the bows of soccer fans, and the catalyst for popularity was the Mundial. Elements of soccer aesthetics, for example, T-shirts have already been mixed with classic and sports pants, denim shorts and bermudas, denim, and tennis skirts. Modern fashionistas combine blockchain t-shirts with romantic ruffles and lace skirts.

This summer is also rich in high-profile sporting events. The Olympics in Paris and the European Football Championship made even those who don't usually think about physical activity think about it. In 2024, we get a more creative rethinking built on contrasts - a combination of feminine and masculine styles. This aesthetic then merged with another popular “-core” of the year - flirty. This is how the new trend, dubbed blokette, came to be. Let's break down what is blokecore, how this style has changed, and at the same time find out what to wear in the coming months.

What Is Blokecore Really?

The emergence of trends is influenced by different areas of culture and lifestyle. After the popular “Barbiecore” and “old money aesthetic” there is blokecore style that is at the peak of popularity this season. Sports is an area that has always been inspired by the fashion world. And if earlier it was tennis or golf, today celebrities and influencers turn for inspiration to another kind of activity - soccer. This is how a new trend has emerged - blockcore, which combines fashion and sportswear.

Blockcore is inspired by the style of England fans of the 70s and 80s, as well as the Brit-pop of the 90s. But it took off thanks to TikTok. The term blockcore was coined in late 2021 by American ticktocker Brandon Huntley, who accompanied a perfectly ordinary look by combining a soccer jersey with jeans with the humorous caption, “The hottest trend of 2022 is blockcore.” When blogger Brandon Huntley launched the hashtag #blokecore, he had no idea he would unveil one of TikTok's most buzzed-about fashion trends. The thing is, Huntley has never parted with a vintage jersey of his favorite club.

The name itself is also a combination of two words: bloke - in British and Australian slang, something like “bro”, and core - denoting a fashion trend. Brandon used the term bloke because it is often used by British soccer YouTubers. But suddenly the joke got out of hand: the style swirled, gained momentum for the 2022 World Cup, and continued to grow beyond that. Nevertheless, today's fashionable soccer aesthetic has gone far beyond the confines of an exclusively male closet.

So, the mandatory attribute of the blokecore is the polo shirt, jersey, or long sleeve with the names of soccer teams. Sneakers, a belt bag, and sports pants will complete the image. The trend was picked up by it-girls: Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Julia Fox, and Hailey Bieber do not stop wearing sneakers Adidas model Samba.

Blokecore is a combination of soccer jerseys or polo shirts with jeans or classic pants. Yes, exactly the combo that has been adopted by soccer fans around the world for a very long time now. They wear jerseys with their favorite team logos in any situation and under any clothes - just like a permanent uniform.

How to Dress in Blokecore Style?

Along with the interest in social networks, many designers paid attention to blokecore fashion, and fashion trendsetters began to turn to blokecore more and more often. Of course, they did not put off the opportunity to try the trend on themselves. Drake, Rihanna, and Winnie Harlow choose the usual jerseys of sports clubs like Juventus Turin, Inter Milan, or Borussia Dortmund, wear them while performing at concerts, or try them on during modeling shoots. And even in ordinary life, they are worn at once or twice a day! And the heroines of street style at Fashion Weeks followed them.

In just one year blokecore became a trend of such a scale that it has swept up many others. And its elements penetrated the closets of even those girls who have never watched football in their lives. Take at least the phenomenal popularity of Adidas Samba sneakers: in just a year they have turned from the footwear uniform of fans into it-shoes and mast-head of any closet. Now it's our turn, especially since you can reproduce the most fashionable look of the season in no time at all: all you need to do is stroll around the nearby secondhand shops in search of a suitable T-shirt.

It is quite easy to pick up an image in blokecore style since it does not require big expenses, shopping trips, and shopping tricks. The basis of the outfit will be a T-shirt from a second-hand or sports store, straight or baggy jeans, and sneakers - plus, a voluminous leather jacket will fit organically.

Vintage soccer team uniforms from the 1990s will look cool with bright horizontal figures and the names of the club's most famous athletes on the back. But no one forbids us to mix fan clothes with every day and even evening clothes - Rihanna, for example, never bothered with it at all.

If earlier the main element of blokecore style images were jerseys with large prints and names of soccer teams, now you can borrow equipment for any other sport.

Advanced fashionistas are advised to apply the “play of contrasts” styling technique. Wear a sports jersey with emphasized girlish clothes: “flying” skirts and elegant shoes. This combo fits perfectly into this year's trending “blokette” aesthetic. Fashion Influencers simply combined in their images two popular styles - delicate “coquette-core” and sporty “blokecore”. For example, you can complement a bright oversized T-shirt with a trendy A-silhouette skirt and comfortable ballet flats. It will be a very comfortable and stylish combo at the same time. By the way, you can safely replace the ballet flats with sneakers, and the puffy skirt with a tight silk maxi. All you have to do is to take a spacious shopper and you can safely go on all important errands.

If a jersey made of synthetic material is not to your liking, opt for a simple cotton blokecore style T-shirt. The main thing is that it should have a special sports print. It can have the names of soccer teams, players' names, their numbers, or all at once. As for the color, we advise you to take note of the “top” of a bright shade: red, cobalt, yellow, or green. This will transform even the most boring looks.

By the way, if you want to show off your abs, then look out for a sporty cropped top. It will look especially effective with trendy shorts, jeans, or low-waisted skirts. And if you want to add pepper, combine the same baggy T-shirts with deliberately refined things - thin sunglasses, sandals, even a classic skirt or pants (this is the school of Bella Hadid). This could visually lengthen your legs, and comfortable flip-flops or sandals on a platform - such items returned to the fashion arena.

Don't write off the popular polo shirts. Models with soccer symbols will also fit perfectly into the blokecore trend. You can complement it with a mini skirt or just jeans - the wow effect is guaranteed.

Of course, soccer uniforms haven't disappeared, either - in recent weeks the eyes of spectators around the world have been fixed on the European Championships. Jersey shirts with player numbers and club names are still at the peak of popularity. And with them, pants and shorts with leggings.

The catwalks presented several ways to fit sporty things into the everyday image. You can complement a relaxed bow with them. For example, to rhyme an Olympic with jeans, as at the Gucci show, or to combine a biker top with Capri pants. But a much more popular solution is to add a feminine touch to a sporty look by complementing a workout outfit with romantic pieces made of flying fabrics. For example, you can easily combine boxer shorts with a sheer top. Or take inspiration from Louis Vuitton and wear a roomy sporty zipper with a flowing maxi skirt.

In order not to make a blokecore look too “sporty”, it is better to refuse joggers as a bottom or look at the most neutral monochrome models. An alternative to sporty pants - straight jeans. Again, continuing the vintage theme, bet on retro variants in the spirit of the 1990s.

Even though fans of blokecore style most often wear Adidas Samba sneakers, you can also experiment with heels. Loose pants and an oversized T-shirt need to be balanced with something, and graceful mules or chukka boots will help. Just no unnecessary details like rhinestones and feathers - shoes should be laconic.
