by 顺之 聂 12 Mar 2024

Those "ugly" fashion and oversized are a little behind us for now. This time, femininity is back with us in fashion, and that's why we're seeing the fierce return of the trends of the noughties. Look at the collections from bands like Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dion Lee, and other popular brands, which have now become an important part of the fashion influencer's and celebrities' must-have fashion wardrobe. Almost at the same time, designers decided to bring the corsets back to the catwalk during fashion weeks, and street style fashion-influencers immediately picked up this trend, diluting their casual everyday and formal evening looks with all kinds of corsets. What a good news for lovers of romanticism and femininity!

This element has long been perceived as a piece of underwear. Undoubtedly, in 2023, they have become a real hit of fashionable items. Now they are worn to emphasize femininity and the sense of fashion taste of each individual. You do not have to act like a Renaissance lady to take part in the trend for corsets since they are especially relevant this season. In addition, these tops are a real fashion chameleon, changing style and mood depending on the look that you want to create. How to choose the right piece and harmoniously fit it into your fashion look? Keep reading this blog and we tell you in detail.

What Is a Corset?

This piece has remained an important element of a woman's closet for several centuries. The word "corset" itself comes to us from the French language, meaning body. Traditionally, it is an undergarment worn over the torso that shapes or trains the body into an hourglass silhouette. The classic model, often seen in vintage fashion, consists of two strips of fabric that fasten in the front and lace up in the back, allowing wearers to tie it as tight as they like to constrict the waist.

Historically, in the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, the corset's whale whiskers or steel bones reinforced the shape of the women's body, although manufacturers use plastic or nylon instead of the traditional bust for many modern fashion pieces. In Europe, this piece of clothing appeared in the 16th century, although the garment was known even earlier: among the inhabitants of Crete and Mycenae, the corset was used as an outer costume.

Modern fashion retailers have adapted the traditional corset silhouette into more casual tops that constrict the waist and support the breasts (like a bustier), but often do not contain reinforced boning because they constrain movement. Still, many modern items of corrective undergarments (including waist training underwear, which over time shapes the torso into a distinct curve) have the same purpose as a corset: to enlarge the bust and streamline the waist.

Nowadays, it is a vintage addition to erotic lingerie or a self-sufficient element of a woman's extravagant image.

Corset can be combined not only with a feminine dress, but also with a T-shirt and jeans for a more street style. To create a layered image, people can put on a turtleneck or shirt, as for daily outfits, or style this top with a pencil skirt and a thin blouse to create a office lady look. A brighter model with pronounced stylization can be used for solemn images. A corset of decorative fabric turns into a dressy outerwear, which also corrects the figure.

Today's fashion has become more favorable to women, so corset tops are made of different fabrics:

Natural silk fabric is used for the inner and outer layers of the clothes. Textile not only looks beautiful but also perfectly combined with any style;

leather - used for the manufacture of the outer layer of clothing. It covers corsets used as underwear, as well as street versions;

denim fabric - used for sewing the top layer of corsets, which are worn as an accent. This option is perfectly combined with a variety of rock styles, but classic dresses look out of place;

lace - used for the design of underwear.

Different Styles of the Corset Top

By 2023, the popularity of corsets has reached new heights and now fashion designers offer different interpretations of this closet essential. Designers lift vintage collections of fashion houses and come up with all kinds of new shapes and prints. At the moment it is possible to distinguish several models of the top that are especially popular:

Bustier corsets
These pieces resemble a classic bustier. Such a model is often made with the use of translucent fabrics, lace, and other decorative elements. Bustier corsets can be perfectly used in casual, office, and evening styles.

Corsets with long sleeves
This type is a hybrid of a corset and a blouse. Such a model is found with long sleeves, and with lantern sleeves, or with three-quarter sleeves. This type of corset looks great with jeans, skirts, and shorts. They can help you to create an elegant look easily.

Corset dresses
This is a clothing option in which a corset is joined with a skirt to create a single piece of dress. These dresses come in both short and long lengths and can be made in a variety of styles, from romantic to gothic.

Sports corsets
This is a new trend in fashion. They are made of a more casual, dense fabrics and such corset gives the impression of a sporty look. However, they can be worn safely with jeans, cargo pants, and even joggers.

It is important to remember that when choosing a corset, you need to consider your comfort while wearing this item. Choose a model that fits your style and image, emphasizes individuality, and conveys the mood - romantic, daring, or business.

How to Style a Corset: Pairing It with Different Outfits

A corset top is an exquisite and intricate piece of closet. It can be used as an independent element of clothing or in combination with other clothes. It has become one of the hottest trends of this season. And this is not surprising: the model looks spectacular and allows you to correct your body shape. Actually, a stylish corset is incredibly slimming. Some of them pull down minus 6-8 cm from the waist. However, some people do believe that this top can not be called universal - it is difficult to include them in everyday style. A basic piece can be styled in almost any look: casual, business, or evening. If you want to compose an image with a corset for the first time, here are some ideas for creating a stylish image:

Wear a lace corset top under a basic blazer
One way to create a stylish summer look in classic style is to wear a corset top under a basic loose fit or oversized blazer. Both monochrome satin corsets and more dressy lace models are suitable for creating an outfit. The shade of the top better is the same temperature as the shade of the suit. And don't forget about accessories - actual massive rings, pearl pendants, or large earrings.

Combine a semi-transparent corset top with a classic shirt
These tops can be both monochrome - in lemon, pink, blue, or green shades, and with accent details. For example, decorated with embroidered flowers, small beads, or decorative stitches. We recommend wearing such corsets over basic loose-fitting shirts. If you want to make the image more sexy, use a boyfriend style shirt instead of a mini shirt dress. You can complete this outfit with a pair of heeled shoes, or with a pair of over-the-knee boots during wintertime.

With a skirt
You don't have to wear a mini skirt to pull off this summer look with a corset top. Instead, focus on the dynamic details of the skirt. Soft pleats and lush volume of the skirt can create an air of romance that pairs perfectly with a vintage-inspired corset or bustier.

With basic jeans
Although satin clothes are most often used to create outfits for evening, corsets made of santin fabric are well combined with basic blue jeans. This look turns out to be both feminine and casual at the same time. Corset tops made of white and colored satin are going to be super relevant in summer 2024. They can be with straps that support the chest, or without them. It is better to choose jeans with a high rise fit - so you can emphasize the waist and make the image more refined.

Use a denim corset to create a total denim look
Another trend is the "denim on denim" look, which is composed by using exclusively denim pieces. Stylish and versatile fabric remains in fashion, not for the first year, so a denim corset can be a good investment for this summer. The tops with ties on the back are especially relevant in this look. They can be worn both on the bare body or over a denim shirt. You can complete the look with a mini skirt made of thick denim or loose jeans with voluminous pockets for a street style look.

Combine with unusual sleeves with classic pants
To create a feminine and elegant image, use a corset top made of satin, complemented with unusual sleeves. These can be both puffy lanterns and sleeves in a fold, hanging on the shoulders. This top is best combined with classic high-waisted pants. You can complete the image with a wide belt with a minimalistic plaque. If the color of the corset repeats the color of the pants, you can do without a belt - so you can visually elongate the figure due to the vertical lines.

Strapless corset with leather pants
Bared shoulders always look sexy. Therefore, if you plan to create a spectacular evening outfit, a corset without straps is perfect for you. Especially relevant models in black color - they can be made of both leatherette and dense denim or suit fabric. This model works best when styled with those sexy leather pants. The image with the use of these things looks both daring and aesthetic. As accessories, you can use a massive necklace. If you plan to gather your hair, wear large earrings.

With shorts
For a more casual summer look that is suitable for a beach day, you can just wear a structured corset top and denim shorts. The combination of clean lines and comfortable shorts looks casual and can be dressed up for an evening date or a daytime lounge in the beach resort.
