How to Store Clothes?

by LiWenshan 22 May 2024

Unfortunately, not everyone can boast of having a walk-in closet, like, for example, the heroine of "Sex and the City" Carrie Bradshaw. And sometimes there are a lot of clothes, and you don't want to say goodbye to them. Do not be upset about this, because you can organize space in a small room so everything fits and is stored in order. To do this, you only need to intelligently approach the issue. Things that are stored incorrectly quickly lose sight. It is not only about expensive materials and skillful decor. Cotton T-shirts can quickly fade and lose their neat appearance. Do not neglect cleaning the closet, and how you can save the space to store clothes, we will try to consider further.

As Mark Twain said, "A man is colored by his clothes. Naked people have very little influence in society, if any, ". You can't argue with that - by clothes we meet, by clothes we find "our own," by clothes we express ourselves, and, of course, clothes protect us in any weather. For summer, fall, spring, winter, camping, vacation, vacation, jogging, and dates, every person has plenty of reasons to change his outfit. Unless, of course, you are Mark Zuckerberg. However, an ordinary closet often cannot store accumulated clothes over a few years. Sooner or later, you will have to revise.

Nevertheless, clothes should be properly stored so that the choice of a suit or the search for a basic set does not turn into a half-hour quest around the apartment. Even the coolest outfits may never see the light of day simply because you didn't notice them on your shelves. Clutter is the No. 1 enemy of any walk-in closet; it's even more to be feared than shopaholism, and together, it's a killer cocktail. Let's keep calm: in this article, we will tell you how to properly store clothes, care for them, revise, and make it so that choosing an outfit is easy!

Clean Your Clothes Before Storing

Don't be in a hurry to store clothes you've only worn a couple of times on the mezzanine or the back shelves of your closet. Even these things need to be cleaned. What can be washed in the machine and sent there should be dry-cleaned. Remove all stains and wash only with a detergent that suits the material. For example, for membranes, you can only use liquid powders. Otherwise, it will lose its properties. After washing, dry the garment thoroughly and only then put it away.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Storing Clothes Long-Term

Step 1: Check it
Before you store clothes, empty your closet. Put away all items, including clothes, on hangers, baskets, and hooks. You may even find some well-forgotten outfits in the process.

Step 2: Prepare things for sorting
- Check your outer and inner pockets: are there any lost items or old receipts?
- Sometimes, things sit in your closet for years because they're missing a button or have a small hole. If you've been waiting for a sign to sew up that hole, here it is! Also, don't forget to remove lint: you can do this with a razor or a special machine.
- Make sure the clothes are clean, without stains or bad odor. Wash your clothes according to the care instructions on the labels. If your clothes have stubborn stains that even dry cleaning can't fix, don't rush to throw them away! Recycle it or use it for needlework and upcycling.
- Remember that moisture and insects are the main enemies of long-term storage. Check that the clothes are completely dry. Also, make sure that there are no food residues on things that attract insects.
- Wool and cashmere items require extra protection: use special moth and insect repellents if you store these materials for long periods.

Step 3: Sort clothes before storing
- Group your clothes into categories: t-shirts, pants, dresses, shoes, etc. See in which categories some duplicate items or items are similar in characteristics. In a selection situation, decide based not only on your affection but also on the quality of the clothing and its combination with the rest of your closet.
- Examine each item and ask yourself: do you need it? If you haven't worn a sweater once during the year, it can be sold, donated, or given to charity.
- Next, categorize your stuff by season. Keep seasonal clothes in a single set to quickly change your closet during the off-season and not look for things in different places in the apartment.

12 Tips to Store Your Clothes Efficiently

1. Packaging. Natural materials should breathe and ventilate. However, only observe the temperature regime: exclude storage on the balcony in winter at -20 degrees or on the summer loggia, with a greenhouse temperature of +25 and scorching sunlight; otherwise, "Goodbye, color!"

2. Coats and sheepskin coats are better stored in a voluminous cover made of breathable material. The system of storing outerwear differs from that of storing regular sweatshirts, sweaters, and generally knitwear. The cover allows the clothes not to dust, and the volume is necessary for the air inside to circulate freely and ventilate the fabrics.

3. Jeans are best stored folded, not on a hanger - this way, they will be preserved without the classic crinkles and will not stretch out under their weight.

4. Woolen and fur things should be carefully protected from insects with the help of special repellents. A sachet with lavender flowers is an excellent moth repellent - it is not only protection from pests but also a great aroma for stored clothes.

5. Outerwear and men's suits should be stored on hangers with extended shoulders to avoid deformation. That's why storing clothes in a dressing room is the most convenient - a separate room can accommodate as many rails as you need.

6. Hanger-shoulders should be selected considering the size of the clothes. If you pick up too large hangers, there is a risk of stretching the clothes in the shoulders so they will not return to the initial shape. If you take too small hangers, the clothes will not hold well on the hanger, and secondly, there will be unpleasant bumps in the shoulders, which will not be corrected on a knitted or woolen product. Hangers should be used depending on the compactness. If the rod is small, and there are many things, then thin plastic or wire hangers with a rubberized coating are suitable. There are also multilevel hangers in stores, but it is better not to use them, as things will crumple, and the use process is inconvenient. Observe the rule: 1 hanger = 1 thing: to take and return the thing place will not be difficult.

7. If you use clothes storage services, only clean and dry clothes should be sent there for storage. Dirt on the fabrics may eventually become so strong that it cannot be washed off. Stains, crumbs, and dirt also make the fabric less resistant to wear and tear.

8. Silk blouses and light dresses should be stored on shoulders with anti-slip coating or covered with a fabric such as satin. In this way, the silk will remain soft and voluminous without chafing. An important condition for storing airy light dresses made of natural and synthetic materials is to keep the volume of the fabric in the shoulders, which is exactly what soft shoulder pads will provide.

9. Store underwear clothes is best in special organizers. For a wardrobe closet, it is best to use fabric coffers with dense walls. If dividers are inside the coffers, you must also consider their strength. Poor quality materials will not hold their shape, because of which things will be mixed, and the order will be disrupted. If you have deep shelves, then special coffers-organizers in combination with vertical storage will noticeably facilitate access to things; the coffer is easy to pull out and take things from the back row. If the shelves are high, add another one by cutting the furniture board in the construction store to the desired size. Trust me, it's easier and cheaper than it looks. Or use special shelf inserts.

10. Voluminous things - blankets, plaids, pillows - are better stored in soft coffers, which are pliable and can partially take the form of a folded textile object.

11. Storage of shoes, accessories, and bags Besides, clothes, shoes, bags, and various accessories (jewelry, hair bands, belts, etc.) occupy quite a lot of space. All these things also need to be stored competently to save more space. For this, it is also worth using useful tips.

- Coffers and organizers are designed for several pairs of shoes at once; some have cells that can be rearranged. In this way, it is possible to form compartments inside the coffer according to the size of the shoes. This allows you to store shoes conveniently and compactly.
- If the shoes are on the shelf without boxes, it is better to place them not in the traditional way (heels together, socks together) but heel to toe. Thanks to this, the shelf will fit in one pair more than the usual way of storage.
- As for handbags, it is worth combining small handbags in an organizer, box, or coffer and leaving large ones on the shelf or hanging them on hooks. This way, they will be less likely to sprawl on the shelf.
- Accessories can be stored in special hanging organizers with pockets on a hook or hanger.

12. Hang clothes better by length. This will free up space for storing things under the rod. You can put a coffer, organizer, container, bag, or something else there.
