Can You Iron 100% Silk?

Silk fabric is delicate and needs to be ironed under special conditions. If the products are made of high-quality silk fabric, they do not wrinkle easily and therefore do not need to be ironed often. Usually, such high-quality fabrics are made of expensive accessories - neckerchiefs, scarves, blouses, dresses. To give the products an aesthetic appearance, it is enough to dry them after washing them in a straightened form and spread them on a perfectly flat surface.

If you have silk items, read the useful recommendations of experts on how to iron natural silk:
You should start the ironing process without waiting for the product to dry completely. Experts do not recommend ironing a dry fabric, or splashing it with water, as the drops can leave behind stains and streaks. It is also not allowed to allow the thing to dry out, then it will become rough and stiff, and it will not be easy to smooth it.

Place a clean cotton ironing cloth on the ironing board.

Set the iron to a low temperature, which is used for ironing fabrics containing silk fibers. Modern appliances have a "Silk" temperature setting. If there is no this mode, set the temperature between "Capron" and "Wool", it will be no more than 150 degrees. This is the optimal temperature for ironing silk.

If you are not sure of the correct temperature mode, gently run the heated iron in an inconspicuous place. The corner of the product on the wrong side is suitable for this.

It is not recommended to iron natural material with the use of steaming mode. Since under the influence of hot steam, the product can deform and lose its color.

Natural silk should be ironed from the front side but through dry gauze or thin cotton cloth.

When ironing, the iron should be gently led over the surface of the silk fabric. It is important not to linger long on one area, otherwise you risk burning expensive material.

Sometimes it happens that the product dried unevenly, in hard-to-reach places, and in the area of seams, the fabric may be wet at the time of ironing. In this case, a metallic shine may appear on the silk fabric. Only repeated hand washing and natural drying will help to correct the situation.

To make silk fabrics easy to iron, it is important to wash silk products correctly:

products made of 100% natural silk can only be washed by hand;
special soft detergents designed for delicate items should be used for washing;
water temperature should not exceed 30 degrees Celsius;
it is important to wring out the washed product is also important to be gentle, you can slightly wring it out with your hands and hang it up to let the water run off by itself. With such actions after drying on the fabric will not be traces of wrinkles and creases, which are often difficult to remove even when ironing silk.

When you want to remove wrinkles from silk and ironing the fabric, set the mode with the same name. After that, try the heated soleplate of the iron on an inconspicuous part of the item, so as not to accidentally spoil it. If the fabric is ironed and not damaged, then you can safely proceed;

iron the silk thing from the wrong side. If it is a complex cut, then before ironing on the front side put gauze or thin material to avoid damaging the surface, and the iron so will not leave water streaks;

do not iron wet silk, so as not to spoil the fibers. Do not turn on the steaming mode. So, silk will quickly come into disrepair and after such ironing will become stiff;

If the item is dry, a few hours before ironing, put gauze or a towel soaked in water on it.

Tips: If the fabric is stretched (the same is done if creases are formed), it is soaked in a solution of glycerin and dried. Prepare the mixture as follows: 1 tbsp. spoon of substance per 5 liters of water. After that, iron once again. With a hot bath or steam shower
There is another very simple and easy way to remove wrinkles on silk. Hang your dress in the bathroom before you get ready. Hang it so that it hangs flat and does not touch any other surface.

Close the bathroom door and start a hot shower. Take a long and very hot shower. After a few minutes, the steam from the shower will begin to smooth out the wrinkles on the dress and will not damage it. Shake your dress after getting out of the shower, but before you open the bathroom door. This will help some of the wrinkles fall out of the silk dress.

Kettle
Here is another simple homemade way to quickly remove wrinkles on silk. Just boil a kettle and hold the wrinkled areas for a few seconds over the neck or spout, from which steam comes out.

This method is safe and 100% effective. With its help, you can cope with even the most difficult creases. It is simply impossible to spoil the fabric in this way.

If you do not have a special steamer, you can use an iron with a steam function. Hang the clothes on a hanger near the socket so that you can move the iron freely.

Turn on the mode for steaming and, moving the device at a distance of 10 -15 cm from the product, thoroughly treat it with steam.

Important: do not spoil the fabric with hot steam. These manipulations should be repeated for a few seconds.

How to avoid creases?

To make the silk fabric less wrinkled, you need to follow some rules of care:

Washing. You can use an automatic machine (mode for delicate fabrics) or do it manually (at a water temperature not exceeding + 30 degrees).

Powder is not recommended, it is replaced by liquid means, which are thoroughly diluted with water. Another taboo is bleach. Chlorine quickly corrodes delicate fibers.

Pressing. Silk can not be twisted. The washed thing is hung on the shoulders and gently run it with both palms to let the excess water run off.

Until completely dry, the product is placed on a thick towel, which will absorb the remaining moisture, and then again return to the trempel. On the clothesline, the fabric will stretch and creases will form.

Clothes and accessories made of silk look stylish and expensive. Thanks to unique colors and prints, as well as amazing shimmers, this fabric never goes out of fashion. However, such a delicate material requires special attention. Improper ironing will lead to the destruction of fibers, and the fabric itself will lose its brightness and aesthetics.

Following simple rules when trying to remove wrinkles on silk garments, you can keep their pristine appearance for a long time, and the fabric will remain soft and will not lose its unique luster.
