by XiaoBo 23 Aug 2024

Practically every person in everyday life has faced an unpleasant situation when a dress sticks to the body. Quite harmless in everyday life phenomenon, often accompanied by crackling and even sparking, causes some discomfort when things not only “beat” the current, but also attract dust, hair small lint, and, in addition, the dress sticks to the tights. Back 600 years before Christ. Thales of Miletus became interested in an unusual phenomenon: if amber is rubbed on wool, it will acquire the ability to attract lightweight objects, the same feathers, and small lint. Electrical activity is an integral part of all life on Earth. Every day each of us feels the manifestation of static electricity, when we get out of the car, iron a cat, or take off a wool sweater over the head, clearly feel the crackling and unpleasant tingling in the fingertips. This effect is due to electrification - a phenomenon in which there is a redistribution of charges, because of which clothes can deteriorate in appearance. After reading the article to the end, you will get some useful tips on how to eliminate this unpleasant phenomenon.

Sometimes the most beautiful and suitable for the occasion dresses bring an unpleasant surprise - they become electrified and stick to the tights. Walking in this case is uncomfortable, and the appearance sharply loses its attractiveness. Let's consider which fabrics are more electrified and which are less electrified.

Polyester, acrylic. These synthetic fabrics create an amazing effect of iridescent shine and soft “glow” due to the use of flat polyamide and film fibers. In the light of daylight lamps, such products seem to “light up”, and shimmer and shimmer. Synthetic dresses have several advantages: they are easier to care for (wash, dry), they do not form pellets, they do not get moths, they do not cause allergies, and do not shed, however, these dresses are most susceptible to electrification. Such dresses in combination with aprons doom the inevitable occurrence of static.

Many women are familiar with light airy chiffon dresses. Fabrics from which they are sewn, are distinguished by a special weave, pleasant to the touch, and festive, however, one of the disadvantages of such products is their high electrification. By the way, under the chiffon dress perfectly fit densely decorated gold earrings, stylists also recommend wearing several types of jewelry at the same time: a solid chain with a fashionable pendant or medium-length beads consisting of one or more strings of pearls.

Nylon, wool, viscose, silk. There is a myth that natural fabrics do not electrify and only synthetics can accumulate static electricity. Surprisingly, natural wool is also capable of accumulating static electricity - this is its natural property. Silk, although it is woven by silkworm caterpillars, also electrifies! Viscose is considered a “conditionally natural” fabric since it is produced from cellulose fibers artificially, but it tends to accumulate static electricity slightly. When choosing a dress from such a fabric, you need to pay attention to this.

Cotton, linen. They do not electrify and well support thermoregulation, so wearing things from such fabrics is a real pleasure. A dress made of natural linen - the best option for a hot summer dress, it perfectly transmits air and also has an attractive appearance. Complement such a dress with a non-standard large ring on half a finger or a huge designer necklace. What should you do if your dress sticks to your tights? To do this, you should use special means - antistatic agents, which will easily get rid of problems associated with the sticking of clothes. Processing them will help to create a thin film on the surface of the clothes to retain moisture, which will reduce the adhesion of the dress to the tights. Antistatic can be purchased in a store or made by yourself. If the prepared outfit sticks to the naked body, and there is no time to change clothes or prepare an antistatic spray, you can use the following means at home.

Moisturizing cream, like many other substances, helps to increase the moisture content of the fabric. In particular, for application to the skin of the feet, you can take any moisturizing cream. However, be careful: with too much of it, there is a high probability that the cream will not be fully absorbed by the skin and will appear on the dress. body lotion, like moisturizing cream, should be applied to the place of contact between the skin and the fabric, which will increase its antistatic effect. baby powder or talcum powder for the skin will not increase its moisture but will reduce the electrification of the fibers of the fabric, and the dress will be less sticky to the legs.

If the dress sticks to the tights, then antistatic for the dress can be replaced by a simple handy tool - water, which is certainly found in every home. This is the easiest and cheapest way to eliminate the sticking of the dress, for which you need to fill a sprayer with water and spray it on the fabric. To avoid water stains, it is better to use the nozzle for the sprayer, providing the finest possible atomization, but be careful: you should not do it from a close distance. However, this simple method has one significant disadvantage: water evaporates quickly, and electrification returns with it.

If the dress is sticky to the tights, there is another, no less simple and affordable remedy - the use of ordinary soap. To eliminate electrification at home, it is recommended to run a bar of dry soap over the surface of the tights, as well as on the inner surface of the dress. However, before you start to eliminate sticking in this way, you should check on a small section of fabric: whether there will be any white traces of soap on its front side. So that the dress is not electrified, you need to use a simple solution from the ingredients available to every hostess. Rinse the dress in water, mixing it with vinegar or ordinary soda in a ratio of 6:1, this will help not only to avoid sticking but also to remove persistent unpleasant odors. In addition, such an ingenuous rinse will wash away soap or powder residue from the fabric, left after pre-washing.

Tips for Preventing Static Cling in Clothes

So you've picked out the perfect outfit. But as soon as you put the dress on, it starts to stick to your body, making you look bad. That's a setback. Luckily, electrification is directly related to dryness and there are some pretty simple ways to make your dress stop sticking to your body.

1. Wipe the dress with an antistatic cloth. Lift up the skirt of the dress and wipe the underside of the dress with an anti-static cloth. If static electricity has built up on the chest or hard-to-reach areas of the garment, it may not be as easy to remove, but it is still possible. If you do it right, the static will transfer to the cloth in no time.

2.Spray the dress with water from a sprayer. Spray water on the area where you feel the electrification. You can use an old Mr. Muscle bottle or the bottle you use to spray your houseplants, most importantly, take care not to get the dress too wet. Lightly spray the area where you feel electrified. This will quickly eliminate static electricity but don't spray too much water. You don't want a wet spot left on your dress, after all. Don't worry, the dress won't electrify anymore once the water droplets dry.

3. Use an anti-static spray. This spray is available in most drugstores and supermarkets and will quickly help you eliminate electrification. Spray the spray where you feel the static electricity is affecting you.

4. Spray hairspray on your dress. Hold the bottle of hairspray far enough away from your body at an incline. Keep your arms outstretched and your eyes closed so that the hairspray doesn't accidentally get on your face. You can also smear lotion on your hands, then apply it to your body where static electricity builds up. Don't rub too hard. It is better to choose a lotion without perfumes, as you only need to moisturize your skin slightly.

5.Touch grounded metal. Any piece of metal in contact with the ground will eliminate electrification. Avoid touching ungrounded metal objects such as doorknobs. If you do, the electrification can become even worse, and sometimes you can even get a painful static discharge. A metal fence is an excellent example of grounded metal.

6. Apply moisturizing body lotion to the areas of your skin where the dress sticks. The lotion will help prevent electrification. When static electricity does not build up on your body, it will not build up on your clothes either. This method will be very difficult if the whole dress is electrified, but you should try it if a certain area is affected by static electricity. Baby powder is also quite suitable for this purpose, but it leaves traces and has a specific odor. If you do decide to use baby powder, apply it to your hands and gently rub it into your skin - in the area where the dress sticks to your body. Use a very small amount of powder.
