How to Wash Winter Coat?

by 顺之 聂 26 Oct 2023

A winter coat is a key part of the closet during the cold season. Before putting your coat away for storage until next season, you need to make sure it's clean. But how do you wash it properly and keep it in great condition? There are several options for solving the problem: give the thing to the dry cleaner or try cleaning it at home yourself.

The way to wash a winter coat depends on reading the care label and determining whether it can be washed at home in a washing machine or whether dry cleaning is required. The cleaning products needed for each type of coat vary greatly, as some can be cleaned with laundry detergent, while others should not come in contact with water and will require a brush. The first thing to know is that most winter clothes cannot be washed in a washing machine. Instead, it's best to take the coat to a dry cleaner. Clothing care experts recommend dry cleaning, especially if the coat is made of natural materials such as wool or cashmere. Professionals can deal with various stains and dirt that can cause damage to your coat.

For those who want to save money on dry cleaning winter coats, information on how to wash thick coats, and choosing the right mode and relatively safe detergents will be useful. It is also important to learn how to dry them quickly to avoid unpleasant odors and dents left after winter.

How Long Can You Wear a Coat Without Washing It ?

First, if you don't wash your winter coat, it will eventually ruin its appearance – as sweat and dirt accumulate, your coat will no longer look bright or original. Adding to that, the fact that if you store your coat without washing it, residual perfume odors can attract pests like moths. If you have particularly sensitive skin, dirty clothes can also cause irritation, so wash your coat from time to time, but how often?

Of course, the answer to this question depends a lot on how often you wear your coat and what conditions it's in. For example, if you're particularly active in it or it's the only coat you wear, it will likely need to be washed more often. But as a general rule, you should wash wool or down coats twice a season with regular use, which is about once every six weeks. Thinner alternatives require more regular washing. Fleece jackets should be washed after about seven uses, and raincoats should be washed once a month. All winter coats should also be washed before being put into storage.

Can My Coat Go in the Washing Machine ?

Can I wash my coat in the washing machine? A better understanding of whether the coat can be machine wash will be possible by studying information from the label. It is possible to wash a winter coat in a washing machine if there is a sign on the label authorizing this action. It is important to find out the percentage of wool content in the product. When the coat is 65% or more wool, it is best not to machine or hand wash.

Learn the temperature of the washing machine, as well as recommendations for automatic drying from the label. If, in addition to wool, the coat consists of 30-50% synthetic fibers, then it is allowed to be used for cleaning the product. Before washing, it is necessary to determine the mode and temperature.

It is not recommended to wash winter coats made of natural and artificial fur, suede, or nubuck. Woolen fabrics, fleece, vinyl, waterproof fabrics, and downcoats can be washed by selecting the permissible washing mode and the necessary detergents for each type of material.

How to Clean Wool Winter Coats

Whatever the fashion trends of the fall-winter season, the woolen coat does not give up its position in the closet of a modern woman. With the arrival of cold weather, this very thing will not only protect itself from wind and cold, but also favorably emphasize the femininity and style of its owner. Since it is winter, a very relevant topic at the moment is how to clean a wool coat.

Like any other material, wool has the property of getting dirty. In addition, it becomes covered with lint and loses its attractive appearance. To solve the second problem, you just need proper care once every two or three weeks.

If your winter coat is smooth, then the lint is easy and without problems to remove with an ordinary razor. If, however, you have a coat, as I do, fleecy, that is, the surface of the fabric is looped, then it is most convenient to remove lint with a foot file. Most often in the process of wearing lint collects in the front, on the sleeves. And with the help of a foot file, they are very easily and delicately peeled off.

What should you do about stains on your coat?

It is not always possible to turn to a dry cleaner for help. Sometimes you have to pay a lot for this service, and sometimes you just don't have enough time. It is important to remember that it is recommended to remove the stain from the winter coat the same day. It is not worth waiting for the dirt to dry.

Home DIY method:

Mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 4 tablespoons of ammonia. With a cotton sponge or a piece of absorbent cotton, apply the remedy to the surface to be treated. Then clean with a slightly wet sponge and a dry cloth.

Mix ammonia solution and glycerin in a ratio of 1:2 until viscous consistency is obtained. Apply the product to the wool, and use a damp sponge to collect the residue.

Add liquid soap and 1 teaspoon of alcohol in warm water. Use the resulting solution to treat the surface of the winter clothes.

The easiest, most convenient, and most effective option can be called cleaning with a stain remover, carpet cleaner, or the use of wet wipes. Remove the residue of the winter coat with a sponge, wait until the surface dries and, if necessary, rinse the product. Before proceeding, try the mixture on the bottom or a piece of fabric left over from sewing.

It is not recommended to clean a wool coat at home if:

Clothes are too expensive, as there is a risk of spoiling them. The coat is made of white wool:

cleaning may result in gray or yellow stains.

The label prohibits any kind of cleaning. The manufacturer states that the item may only be dry cleaned.

The cause of the stain was oil or fuel oil. Such petroleum products can hardly be removed by themselves.

How to Clean Down Coats and Vests?

If your down jacket is stained, don't rush to throw it entirely into the washing machine. There are a few circumstances when you should definitely not do this.

First, if there is such an indication on the label. Do not neglect it. Otherwise, from the machine you risk getting a shapeless pile, which will never acquire the appearance of your favorite down jacket.

Secondly, if the puffer jacket has only one or a few stains. Most of all, down jackets do not tolerate frequent washing. With each time gradually nullifies the property of moisture resistance and imperviousness. And if full-fledged washing can be avoided, it is better to do so.

The fact that down jackets allegedly can not be washed at home, but must be handed over to the dry cleaner, is a common misconception. Any kind of down clothing, whether it's a vest, jacket, coat or any other kind of winter coat, can be washed at home if you know how. And there are several options for action.

You will need:

Special detergent for down jacket: do not use regular detergent as it will remove the natural oils in the down feathers and make them more susceptible to moisture, choose a proven detergent specifically for down garments.

Dryer balls or 3-4 tennis balls: add these to the dryer to help the jacket dry faster and restore the volume of the down.

First deal with pre-treating stains, if you have any on your winter coats This step should also not be skipped if you are dealing with heavy accumulations of sweat, grease or makeup on the areas adjacent to the skin (often near the chin and neck). Soak the down jacket and try to remove the stains using laundry soap or stain remover. Remember to rinse this area thoroughly before putting the jacket in the washing machine.

Make sure the detergent compartment is thoroughly cleaned to get rid of any harmful detergent residue that will ruin the properties of the down jacket. Fasten all zippers and Velcro and close all flaps so that nothing gets caught in the lining of the jacket. It is better to turn the down jacket inside out. If in doubt, put it in a mesh bag for protection.

Set the washing machine to low or cold temperatures and set the mode for delicate fabrics or wool. Set the washing machine to rinse several times on the slowest/longest spin cycle to make sure there are no cleaning agent residues left in the down.

If the down jacket is new, it is sufficient to restore its characteristics for proper cleaning. However, if you wash your outdoor jacket or simply wear your down jacket for a long period of time and this closet item starts to show signs of water absorption by the outer fabric, it may be time to improve its durable water repellency. While most winter coats are not in the waterproof category, almost every outdoor jacket has a durable water repellent (DWR ) coating, but over time, mostly due to dirt, the coating loses its effectiveness.

Spread the item and hang it over the bathtub. You can use hangers for this. When the water stops dripping, take the fur outside or into a well-ventilated room.

Comb the dried fur.

You can iron the pile a bit using a warm iron with low heat. This is a good option if the fur is lined up.

It is worth wearing rubber gloves before handling the product. If you use ammonia or gasoline, provide ventilation, and open the windows so that the room is thoroughly ventilated. Do not keep the item near open fire sources.
