How to Wash Down Jacket?

by LiWenshan 27 Jun 2024

The down jacket is the most popular clothing for winter. While natural fur has been considered "not a trend" for a few seasons now, jackets and down garments are becoming favorites of more and more people. I love down jackets, too. My family members and I have several models in each of my closets. It is the down garments that I respect the most. The ones with down and feather filling. They really warm up in cold weather, and on warm days, they are not hot. The second half of winter - it's time to put warm shoes, hats, scarves and jackets back in order. Of course, the latter can be taken to the laundry - they know how to wash a down jacket so that the down does not pile up. But then you will have to shell out a tidy sum.

The down jacket owes its name to the filling of natural down. However, manufacturers often prefer synthetic fillers, such as synthesizers or hollow fiber (artificial down). Down garments of different styles are incredibly popular in daily wear during the cold season. The trend for this type of clothing is increasingly stable, and meanwhile, the owners are puzzled by the question of how to wash a down jacket so as not to spoil it. Before buying such a thing, it should be remembered that products with hollow fiber filling are less fastidious in washing and are not afraid of automatic spinning. But warmer are considered those that are labeled on the tag as "duck down" or simply "down," which translates to "duck down." Products with down-feather filling are labeled as "down/feather": the higher the percentage of down, the warmer the thing. We tell you how to wash a down jacket and not spoil its appearance and filler.

How to Wash a Down Jacket by Hand?

Washing a down jacket by hand is quite difficult. But clothes with natural down are recommended to be washed by hand. Hand washing a down jacket is safer but less effective. Hand wash your down jacket vertically on the shoulders or with soaking.

Use a special liquid detergent to wash your down jacket. It quickly dissolves in water, and it is easier to dose. If there is only washing powder in the house, study the instructions and dissolve the necessary amount in water. Washing powder will not harm the down product, but it must be rinsed several times from the cells.

Vertical washing is suitable if the down jacket needs to be refreshed before storage or if there are no serious contaminants. The jacket should be hung over the bathtub on the shoulders and wet with warm water. Then, soap it with a special product and gently clean it. After, rinse the jacket well with a shower jet from top to bottom. To completely remove the detergent, repeat the procedure several times.

For convenience, fill a bathtub or a large basin with water. When washing and soaking, the jacket should be left in warm water for 30-40 minutes with a special agent. After the time has passed - clean the down jacket with a sponge or soft brush. You do not need to intensively rub the down jacket with your hands, as is usually done when washing other things. If there is deep-rooted dirt, you can separately apply a detergent to the dirty places. After - rinse the jacket in a large amount of water several times. Squeeze without twisting and let the residual water drain out.

Hang the down jacket on the shoulders; do not twist it. When the water drains, shake it off to straighten the top fibers and filler. Dry outdoors until completely dry.

A down jacket requires a thorough wash at the end of each season. In the process of wearing it, you can wash individual areas. With proper care, the item remains warm comfortable and looks like new for a long time.

How to Wash a Down Jacket in the Washing Machine?

So, let's look at the key points of how to properly wash a down jacket in a washing machine:

- First, detach the hood and fur inserts;

- Now carefully check the places that are maximally exposed to dirt: the inside of the hem, sleeves, and collar. Before going to the machine, these areas on the down jacket must be cleaned with soap to remove stains. This is important because the machine will not wash off in places that are too dirty. Do not use powder stain remover because it is too foamy and difficult to rinse out;

- Now fasten all the locks and buttons, which will prevent deformation during washing, and then turn the jacket on the wrong side;

- In addition to the down jacket, throwing 2-3 tennis balls into the machine is important. These are big tennis balls with a soft coating. They will prevent the down from being knocked off. It is better to wash the balls beforehand to ensure they do not polish. Do not be afraid that the balls will damage the machine drum; even shoes can be washed in the machine, and they have much more weight than balls;

- Do not choose ordinary powder for cleaning, as it is difficult to rinse out of the fluff. A liquid remedy or gel is better. The latter option is even more suitable since it is sold in the form of disposable doses for washing;

- Choose a delicate mode and a temperature of 30 degrees. In addition, modes for washing wool and synthetic fabrics will be suitable. They use gentle washing so the down will not get out of the seams; they rinse down jackets at least 2-3 times.

- Take the down jacket out of the drum after washing, unzip and turn it on one side. Coats are hung up for drying on a plastic tray; fasten the down jacket to fully restore its shape. Do not dry the jacket near heating devices. Otherwise, there are divorces. In addition, high temperatures damage the feathers. It is not worth drying the jacket horizontally, as it requires air to enter from all sides. The down will not dry normally but will begin to decay and rot; there will be an unpleasant odor. The quality of the down jacket suffers from this; it stops being warm;

- Occasionally, rub the jacket and turn it out on different sides. This will fluff up the fluff; you will not need ironing after drying. If, after washing and drying, the down jacket gets a crumpled look, then use a steamer for smoothing.

- The owners of down jackets have long appreciated the use of tennis balls. Today, there are even often special balls in a set with the jacket.

If you follow all the above rules, you can easily wash a down jacket. But it is worth adding a couple more tips that are important to know before washing:

- Inspect the label; it is possible that your down jacket is not allowed to be washed; only dry cleaning is suitable for it;

- The initial quality of the jacket plays a serious role with down if when you wear it from her relentlessly climbing down, then washing with a machine is not the best way;

- The smaller the size of the stitched squares on the jacket, the higher its quality - so the down is knocked down to a minimum, and the product will survive a greater number of washings;

- Do not load more than one down jacket into the machine at a time, and do not add other items to the drum.

Drying a Down Jacket Correctly?

You can dry your down jacket naturally, for example, if your dryer is broken, but you should pay attention to these tips:

1. Do not dry your down jacket vertically
A wet-down jacket can lose its shape under the weight of its filling. For this reason, the down jacket should be dried horizontally. An ordinary tumble dryer is suitable for this purpose.

2. Avoid sources of heat
Drying of the down jacket should be organized away from heating devices (radiators, fireplaces, etc.) to avoid overheating and deformation of the material.

3. You should not dry your down jacket in humid conditions
Drying down-filled outerwear should be organized in a well-ventilated room to prevent mold. For this reason, a bathroom or any other space with high humidity will not be suitable for drying your down jacket.

4. avoid direct sunlight
Drying in dry, warm weather is the best option, but you should place the down jacket so it does not get direct sunlight. The fact is that bright sunlight can cause the material to fade. Make sure that the dryer with your outerwear is located in the shade.

If you have a drying or washing machine that functions as a drying laundry, you can dry the product there. Let's take a closer look at the simple guidelines to consider before you start the drying cycle:

Study the label of the down jacket
You should look for the tag with the manufacturer's recommendations on how to care for the item. Look for the "dryer" icon, which looks like a circle in a square. If this icon is crossed out, you should dry your down jacket naturally, as a machine can damage the product. Make sure that machine drying is allowed.

Choose the right drying mode
Before drying, ensure your dryer has a special mode for drying down-filled items. A delicate drying cycle will also be suitable for drying the item. The combination of low temperature and gentle drum speed will reduce the risk of damage to your outerwear.

Prepare your down jacket for drying
If you washed the product, you are sure you used a gentle mode without spinning, meaning the downfilling has absorbed much moisture. Prepare a spacious container, such as a basin, to carry the down jacket from the washing machine to the dryer. This will avoid getting water on the floor. If you decide to dry your down jacket after a walk in the rain or wet snow, you should fasten all buttons and zippers. Ensure that the outerwear pockets are empty so that the change does not damage the product, the machine's drum is not damaged in the drying process, and paper products do not settle on the surface of the down jacket.

Use balls
Put a few tennis balls or special soft dryer balls in the dryer along with your down jacket. They will help maintain an even distribution of down and feather inside the product during drying.

Take pauses
Depending on your chosen cycle, you may pause during drying and gently spread the down jacket with your hands. This will help to prevent the down filling from rolling away, and you will make sure that the product dries evenly.
