How to Get Wrinkles Out of Silk Dress?

by XiaoBo 27 Aug 2024

Silk dresses are elegant and luxurious, but this delicate fabric has a tendency to wrinkle. That's why we've put together a complete guide on how to smooth wrinkles on silk dresses with or without an iron. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know to keep your silk dresses looking ironed and polished!

Can you iron silk? Yes, silk can be ironed. Spray your silk item with water until it is damp, then turn it inside out and lay it out on an ironing board. Place a towel or t-shirt over the item to protect the delicate fabric. Turn the iron to its lowest setting and run the iron over the towel until all creases are removed.

Iron a silk dress to remove wrinkles

1. Spray the silk with water. Before ironing your dress, fill the atomizer with water and spray the silk until it is completely wet. If you don't have a sprayer, soak the garment in a tub of slightly warm water, then gently squeeze out the excess water.

· If you wish to wash your silk dress before removing wrinkles, place it in the washing machine on the delicate wash mode and follow any other care instructions on the product label.
· Once the item is clean but still damp, continue ironing to remove wrinkles.

2. Turn on the iron and turn the silk dress inside out. Turn the iron on and set it to the lowest setting. To protect the outside of the garment from possible damage, turn it inside out before ironing. Remember to unbutton the garment, if it is a button-down shirt so that you can lay it completely flat.

· Some irons have a delicate or silky setting. If your iron has one of these special settings, feel free to use it!

3.Place the silk dress on the ironing board and cover it with a towel. Smooth it out as best you can so that the item lies flat on the board. Place a thin towel, cloth, or T-shirt over the silk dress to protect it from the iron.

· If you are ironing a shirt that you cannot unbutton, place the bottom of the shirt on the edge of the ironing board so that the fabric lies in a single layer. When you are finished ironing that side, turn the garment to iron the other side.

4. Iron the silk dress at the lowest temperature possible.

Slowly run the iron over a towel that you have placed on top of the silk dress. This will smooth out the creases in the silk underneath. Run the iron over the towel until you have covered the entire surface, and be careful not to leave the iron on any single area for more than 5 seconds - this can damage the delicate silk.

5. Lift the towel and reposition the fabric to iron in a different area.

Once you have completely covered one side of the piece, set the iron aside, pick up the towel, and transfer the new section of silk fabric to the ironing board. Then place the towel back on top of the fabric and continue ironing it. Repeat this until the entire piece has been ironed.

6. Turn the dress right side out and hang it up to dry.

Place the silk dress on a drying rack or hang it on a rack in your closet. You can also hang it on a clothesline outside if you want to speed up the drying process.

· The item is ready to wear when it is completely dry.
· If you still notice wrinkles in the silk after the item has dried, you can repeat the process or try another way to remove them.

Removing wrinkles with shower steam

1. Hang the silk dress on a hanger in the bathroom.

· Hang the silk dress on a hanger. Then hang it on the bathroom door or a towel rack. Make sure that the silk product is not bent or folded in an odd way while hanging - this can cause additional creases!

2. Take a shower or turn on hot water for a few minutes.

· Close the bathroom door and all bathroom windows to keep steam from escaping. Then take a shower as you normally would. If you don't want to shower, turn on the hottest water possible and let it run for about 3-5 minutes to allow the bathroom to fill with steam.
· Also, do not turn on the fan! This will suck the steam out of the tub.
· If you have a lot of persistent wrinkles on your dress, you may need to hold the hot water a little longer (up to 20 minutes).

3. Place the silk dress in the closet and allow it to dry overnight.

· After you have showered, hang the product in the closet or on any hook outside the bathroom. Hang it until it is no longer damp. The moisture from the steam will help weigh the product down, which will gently smooth out wrinkles as it dries.
· If the item still looks wrinkled after steaming, you may need to use a hand steamer or try another wrinkle removal method.
· If you live in a hot and humid climate, you can even try hanging your silk dress outside for a few hours or all day. The moisture in the air and the high temperature should be enough to smooth out the wrinkles on your item.

With a handheld steamer

Use a hand steamer to smooth out stubborn wrinkles. If your silk dress still has a few creases after washing and drying, you can remove them with a hand steamer. Turn on the hand steamer and swirl it back and forth over the creases to remove them. Then allow the item to dry again on a rack. If you don't have a hand steamer, you can achieve the same effect using the spout of a kettle. Fill the kettle about halfway full, bring to a boil, and remove from the heat. Then point the spout at the wrinkled areas of the item to steam them.

With a hair dryer

1. Turn the product inside out to protect the delicate fabric from the effects of the hair dryer. Then hang the item on a hanger and hang it on a hook, towel rack, or even on a shower curtain rod.

2. Using a sprayer, spritz any wrinkles on the item with water. Fill the sprayer with plain, slightly warm water, then spritz the wrinkled areas until they are completely wet. Don't worry about moisturizing areas that don't have wrinkles.

· If the item is only slightly wrinkled, you don't need to use much water. However, if the wrinkles are severe or deep, you need to spray the areas until they are completely saturated and moist.
· If you don't have a sprayer, you can also dip the wrinkled areas in warm water or hold them under a stream of warm water to moisturize them.

3. Point the nozzle of the hair dryer in cooling mode at the wrinkles.

· Turn on the hair dryer and turn it to the lowest setting. Then pull your clothes tight and point the nozzle of the hair dryer at the wrinkled area. Move the hair dryer back and forth over the area until it is completely dry and the wrinkles disappear.
· Make sure that the hair dryer is not directed at one area for too long. Move the hair dryer back and forth over the area for about 15-20 seconds and then move on to another area.

4. Repeat this process on each wet area until all wrinkles are gone.

Once one area is dry, move on to the next area. Move the dryer back and forth across the silk until the creases are smooth. Continue to methodically work one section at a time until all creases are gone and the product is dry.

With the wrinkle spray

Try commercial wrinkle sprays, it's a hassle-free option. “I love wrinkle sprays,” explains cleaning expert Bridget Price. “They're great for traveling and a quick refresher. I spray my clothes and give them a good shake and the wrinkles smooth out like magic!”

Take your silk garment to the dry cleaners

If nothing else works, head to the dry cleaners. A professional dry cleaner will be able to wash your silk dress and return it to you completely fresh and wrinkle-free. This method may cost a little more, but it's a good option if you weren't able to successfully smooth the item yourself or if you're worried about damaging the delicate fabric. Be sure to read the care label on your silk garment. Some garments are subject to “Dry Clean Only,” which means you'll have to choose this option.

How to prevent wrinkles on silk dress?

It is recommended to wash a silk dress by hand. To do this, water with a temperature of no more than 30 degrees is poured into a basin. It is best to use liquid detergents, they are carefully diluted in water until completely dissolved. In a concentrated form, the fabric can be damaged. If things are bright, and it is decided to use powder for washing, then you should buy a pack with the marking “Color”. If desired, you can use baby soap or baby laundry powder.

To avoid material deterioration, silk should not be bleached, because silk threads are proteins, which chlorine destroys with its aggressive effect. After bleaching, the item tears easily.
