How Dress Shirts Are Measured?

by 姚思曼 25 Sep 2023

Shopping has evolved significantly over the years, extending far beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar experience. Today, the Internet reigns supreme as the ideal destination for acquiring fashionable items at budget-friendly prices. This trend has gained widespread acceptance among women of all ages and body types. However, despite the convenience of online shopping, there is still a crucial caveat: the importance of navigating size charts skillfully to ensure a successful purchase.

In the field of clothing, especially shirts, adherence to standard size charts is the norm. However, when it comes to determining the correct size for a woman's shirt, there are several essential considerations to keep in mind. To ensure a harmonious fit and uncompromising comfort, mastering the art of measurement and selection is paramount. Why do you need to know your clothing size? The answer seems obvious: so that you don't get confused when buying, especially in an online store, and don't order the wrong thing. But there are pitfalls here too. One brand will fit you in L, while another brand will fit you in M or even S. How does one embark on this journey of precision? This blog will show you how to get the right size for your dress shirts.

Steps To Measure A Dress Shirt

This method is perfect for those who want to give a shirt as a gift to a loved one without knowing its exact parameters or for those who do not have a pair of hands to accurately determine your parameters. Take a shirt that fits perfectly, or just fits well, and measure its following characteristics. But before that, you should find a flat surface such as a table or wooden floor. Spread the shirt over this surface, then smooth out any creases. Make sure all the buttons on the shirt are buttoned, including the collar and cuffs. So let’s get it!

1.Chest circumference: measure your chest circumference by laying out your shirt (with buttoned buttons) on a flat surface and taking a measurement below the sleeve seam.

2.Waist circumference: measure your waist circumference by placing your shirt (with fastened buttons) on a flat surface and measuring from one side to the other at the middle height of the shirt (between the fourth and fifth buttons).

3.Hip circumference: measure the distance between the side seams of the shirt. Note that it is not the circumference that is measured.

4.Chest width: measure your chest width by laying out your shirt (with buttoned buttons) on a flat surface and taking a measurement between the armhole seams.

5.Armhole length (front): place the shirt on the surface with the front of the shirt facing you. Measure the distance from the top of the armhole along the seam to the point where the armhole is rolled into the sleeve.

6.Shoulder seam length: measure the distance between the sleeve and collar along the shoulder seam.

7.Sleeve length: measure the sleeve length by laying out your shirt on a flat surface and measuring from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff (inclusive).

8.Shoulder circumference: lay the shirt flat on the surface and measure the sleeve width as shown. Note that it is not the circumference that is measured.

9.Cuff length: to measure the cuff, lay the shirt out on a flat surface as if you were going to iron it and measure the length of the fully open cuff.

10.Armhole height: measure the armhole height on a flat surface.

11.Length: to measure length, lay your shirt out on a flat surface and measure along the back from the collar seam to the bottom.

12.Flare height: measure the height of the basque by taking a measurement between the collar seam and the basque seam.

13.Length of the basque: measure the length at the level of the horizontal seam of the basque by laying your shirt on a flat surface and measuring from one side to the other between the sleeve seams.

14.Neck circumference: the collar should be measured when it is spread out and lying flat. Measure the distance from the center of the buttonhole to the center of the button.

Dress Shirts Sizing

Measurements of men's and women's shirts are different, although both have basic indicators that need to be measured. As for men's shirts, these are collar, sleeve, chest, waistband. And for women's shirts, they are: sleeve, chest, waist, hip. Sometimes shirt manufacturers add such an indicator as length, but usually, it is not so critical.

Write down your measurements and then follow the alpha chart to find your size!

"X-Large" – corresponds to a sleeve length of 83 cm, chest measurement of 109 cm, waist measurement of 93 cm, and hip measurement of 117 cm.

"XX-Large" – a sleeve length of 85 cm, chest measurement of 119 cm, waist measurement of 103 cm, hip measurement of 127 cm.

What Are The Most Common Dress Shirt

Classic shirts include products made from natural and blended materials of fine weaving. The color of the fabric is almost always monochrome. Less often – fabrics with barely noticeable plaid or stripes.
In classic products, the collar is always stiff, and the bottom edge has a curved shape. In such models, 1 pocket is allowed. According to the rules of etiquette, it should be empty.

Dear to their name brands use natural materials in tailoring. Some of the most expensive are products made of natural silk. Textiles used in sewing shirts:

Natural cotton – is a great option for creating a business style. Requires careful care;

Linen – one of the branded materials in this niche. It has high hygiene, but has a significant disadvantage – it wrinkles a lot;

Natural silk – the most presentable and expensive material. Very capricious and requires special care. It is pleasant to touch;

Blended fabrics with cotton – the most common option.Depending on the mass fraction of the components, it can exhibit different properties. Some types demonstrate a low level of air exchange;

Synthetic - available material, the main disadvantages of which are poor air conductivity and tendency to deform after several washings.

Sports models are sewn from corduroy, denim (denim), flannel, and chambray. The composition of these fabrics is different. Information on the raw materials used can be found on label of the product.

For sports shirts, heavier and rougher materials are used. In these models, there can be a lot of pockets and decorative elements (planks, epaulets, epaulets, pats). The collar does not have hard inserts. The color palette of such models is diverse: from restrained smooth dyed to bright printed. Wear such shirts, not tucked into pants.

The most popular styles:

Slim fit – products of the fitted silhouette. Important! The sleeve of such a shirt should correspond strictly to the shoulder. It is unacceptable that the sleeve line was higher or lower. The plank of the clasp should not be stretched.

Classic models – can be worn in combination with vests, jackets, and sweaters. In the ensemble of office or official style, they are worn with a tie, or without it.

Custom-fit - models of free cut. Suitable for men of any build. Such a shirt is not worn with a jacket. It is important that the collar harmonizes with other elements of clothing, and the product itself does not look baggy.

Also, differentiate models by the cut of the collar. Classics include French (or shark), butterfly (stand with sharp elongated edges), tab (necessarily worn with a tie), and Crombie (wide rectangular). All the others are referred to as informal options.

Budget versions, which occupy the largest niche, are often sewn from blended fabrics. Modern industry produces textiles that fully meet hygienic requirements.

Understanding the nuances of fabric types, stretchability, and garment measurements is key to making informed choices in the absence of a tactile shopping experience. By dedicating time and effort to this process, you can turn your online shopping endeavors into a true sartorial triumph.

Remember that knowing your clothing size is not just about avoiding confusion; it's about ensuring that the dress shirts you choose fit like a glove and offers unparalleled comfort. So, armed with your measurements and a keen eye for details, embark on your online shopping journey with confidence and style. Happy shopping!
