What is Tenniscore?

by Shunzhi Nie 29 Aug 2024

If a couple of years ago, the ability of trendsetters from social medias (mostly from TikTok) to put anything into a trend, we admit, amazed us, now we are watching the emergence of new and new trend styles without a drop of surprise, but certainly with interest. At the beginning of the year, the aesthetics of “eclectic grandpa” captured the minds and hearts of millions of fashionistas around the world, and with the arrival of the warm season, it was replaced by the tenniscore. The name says enough about this trend: just as a few seasons ago everyone was dressed as ballerinas, now we will repeat the style of tennis players, not only on the tennis court but also off it.

Recently, the style of tennis core fashion has gone beyond the tennis court. On the streets of cities, you can meet girls in tennis skirts, caps, dresses and polo shirts. It looks very cute and sexy at the same time. This resurgent fashion movement is inspired by the aesthetics of tennis and embraces both nostalgia and modern style. Don't follow matches and never even hold a tennis racket? This summer, you'll want to pretend you're a regular on the court and try on polo shirts, short skirts, white sneakers, and other tennis-inspired aesthetics. Let's find out what tenniscore fahsion is and why tennis motifs have become a relevant part of everyday looks this season and how to adapt sports into a casual style.

Tenniscore – What Is It About?

It's hard to imagine a more stylish sport than tennis. It has always been associated with entertainment for the rich and famous, and elements of the uniform once worn only by athletes have long since made their way into the closets of fashionistas around the world and become synonymous with luxury and elegance.

Tenniscore is a style of clothing inspired by tennis and the culture around the game. It displays the same old money style that was popular last year. Neatness and aristocracy, neatness, ironed white collars, and elegance - that's what tennis core is. The basis of the closet consists of polo shirts, T-shirts, pleated miniskirts, and short sports dresses. The main rule is maximum comfort, practicality, and nothing superfluous.

And the Spring-Summer 2024 shows once again showed us how versatile and stylish polo can be today. A long polo in the color of freshly cut grass with an edge of contrasting texture can be tucked into pants or worn loose. In general, tennis core is characterized by simple, clean lines and minimalist design. Choose laconic dresses, and pleated skirts in neutral or pastel colors. Combine sports elements with classic closet items. As for the accessories, a good solution will be white leather lace-up sneakers in combination with golf shoes. Even though the classic tennis style is associated with white, don't be afraid to add bright accents.

Where Does the Tenniscore Come From?

Tennis, golf, and skiing never pretended to be democratic sports and were associated with last season's popular “quiet luxury”. Tennis was practiced by Princess Diana, Elton John, Farrah Fawcett, Jacqueline, and John F. Kennedy.

The tenniscore has its origins in Victorian England. It was in the 1860s that rackets, nets, and balls began to attract aristocrats. In addition to the equipment, they needed a uniform for the game. As a result, the usual clothes for races and garden parties - loose shirts and pants - were taken as a basis.

Later, at the Wimbledon tournament in 1877, tennis players appeared before the public in all-white robes. This form of dress became the new rule of the competition, which has remained to this day. The reason for this choice of color is that white hides sweat well, reflects light, and emphasizes the high status of the wearer. However, in those years, fashionable uniforms made of linen and cotton were worn only by men. Women played on the court in uncomfortable puffy dresses.

Gradually, clothes became more comfortable: the length of the hem shortened, the corset was replaced by a looser top, and the hat disappeared altogether. - Anna Komkina, Stylist Everything changed in 1919. Tennis player Suzanne Lenglen took to the court at the Wimbledon tournament wearing a midi skirt in a pleat, a T-shirt, and a Panama. Gradually, tennis uniforms took shape.

In 1932 Henry Austin for the first time traded pants for shorts, and in 1926 René Lacoste (the famous designer was a tennis player) took to the court in a short-sleeved shirt. He sewed it himself, so the shirt became the first specially designed clothing for playing tennis. And in 1965, Italian tennis player Lea Pericoli appeared before the public in a dress with ruffles and a white headband.

Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue, in 2009 even asked Andre Leon Talley to step onto the court with a racket and hit a few balls wearing a Ralph Lauren suit, a Louis Vuitton towel, and a diamond vintage Piaget watch. In 2021, Zendaya's stylist Lowe Roach replicated Andre's iconic look for Hello Beautiful magazine.

Tennis has become the talk of the town again with the release of Luca Guadagnino's melodrama The Contenders, starring Zendaya, Mike Feist and Josh O'Connor. But in just two weeks of the promotional tour, Zendea revitalized the tennis aesthetic and made it one of 2024's hottest trends. The actress appeared in shoes with tennis balls instead of stilettos, a knitted polo, and a vintage dress tried on by Cindy Crawford in 1992.

In the movie itself, the outfits of the characters were more formal. Their closet was responsible for the designer and creative director of the house of Loewe Jonathan Anderson. At his suggestion The Contenders appeared in striped shirts, knitted polos, T-shirts with the slogan “I told ya”, strapless dresses, retro sneakers, and tennis skirts. No wonder that in social networks in full swing tenniscore, users massively repeat sensational outputs of the actress.

Tenniscore Outfit Ideas

Sporty clothes have long since “escaped” from competitions to the catwalk and into the closets of fashionistas. And if in the early 2020s basketball was in vogue, tennis has ruled the roost for the last few seasons. Influencers and celebrities massively publish photo shoots from the courts, and social networks are flooded with the hashtag “tenniscore”. We've already told you that Zendaya and her new movie “The Contenders” are to blame. It's not hard at all to dress in the tenniscore aesthetic. Plenty of ready-made outfits that are easy to replicate can be found on social media from fashion influencers. Now let's figure out together how to put together a “tennis” look.

👍Pleated skirt
We suggest you start by buying a tennis dress or skirt. The first association with tennis besides balls and rackets is a mini skirt in a pleat. The first one can be with short sleeves or without them at all, with a polo collar, puffy skirt and necessarily fitted. The second one is straight or pleated and must be very short. If on the court during the game we mostly see tennis players in white, then nothing prevents you from experimenting with shades. Look out for noble dark shades like olive or navy blue.

A cool addition to a tennis dress or skirt will be a sweatshirt with a round neckline or zipper collar. In the choice of shoes, we suggest betting on comfort. Of course, you can follow Zendeia's example and wear pointy-nosed stiletto heels, but we advise you to opt for sneakers for the tenniscore outfit. The final touch is to accessorize: high white socks, a sporty hairband, and a tennis bracelet to make the look more elegant.

👍Polo T-shirt
Polo shirts are having a fashion boom this season: many fashion brands are adding them to their collections, and influencers are constantly coming up with more and more quirky outfits with them. If you're looking for the perfect model for your tenniscore outfit in 2024, we recommend you look at tight-fitting or slightly loose mid-length polos. However, oversized lovers can also opt for voluminous T-shirts.

As for the color, you should not dwell exclusively on white. There are many other equally interesting options - from noble shades, such as olive and navy blue, to more spectacular - for example, colored stripes.

👍Sporty dresses
Another interesting way to dress up your tenniscore style is with a sporty mini dress. It can be slightly loose or tight-fitting, but it must be short. A great addition to the tennis style dress will be high socks, sneakers, and a cap. And if you collect an outfit for a walk in the city, we advise you to try on romantic ballet flats.

👍Tennis sweater
As soon as the summer heat subsides, another familiar attribute of tennis tournaments will enter the fashion arena - a loose-fit sweater with a V-neck. It can be worn both with familiar tennis clothing, such as a pleated skirt or tennis dress, and with a tried-and-true base - straight jeans, wide pants, or floor-length skirts.

👍Knee-high socks
“The longer the socks, the better,” is roughly the motto of the new season. Of course, the easiest way to add white socks to a tenniscore look is to combine them with sporty sneakers and retro sneakers. But the most daring fashionistas can follow the example of Influencers and mix socks with ballet flats or loafers.

👍Tennis bracelet
Tennis bracelet could be a great option for those who can not live without jewelry even in a sporty image. It got its name thanks to tennis player Chris Evert. In 1987, she lost a bracelet of diamonds right on the court and called it “tennis”. Since then, this model has been worn not only by fashionistas but also by sports stars, such as Serena Williams.

👍Retro style sneakers
Back last spring, fashionistas and Influencers went massively crazy for the Adidas Samba. This year, the fashion for “vintage” sneakers is not going to slow down. To be sure to hit the Tenniscore leaderboard, try the laconic sneakers in retro style.
