What Are Twill Pants?

by XiaoBo 25 Sep 2023

Twill pants are pants made of twill fabric. The material appeared centuries ago, presumably in the 300s in the French town of Nîmes.

In the middle of the XIX century, American entrepreneur Levi Strauss adopted the technology of creating cloth for sewing jeans from sailcloth and created the brand "Denim", which literally means "from Nîmes". This is how the twill weave gained worldwide popularity.

While the raw materials used to create the fabric vary, the method of production is unchanged. It endows the material with a number of advantageous characteristics.

The method of weaving is called twill. It is also known as caper or diagonal. The essence is as follows: in the process of leading the weft thread, it shifts in relation to the base. A relief with a characteristic slope is obtained.

Diagonal pattern is represented by large or small rubs, "going" to the right or left at different angles. Particulars depend on the thickness of the thread, texture and the number of weft indentation steps. Twill is classified according to several parameters.

By coloring:
- Printed, that is, to have a pattern. Camouflaged fabric is popular.
- Smoothly dyed, monochrome.
- Bleached.

By type of weaving (fineness and slope of the thread):
- Classic. The slope goes to the right side, the lines have the same width.
- Broken or reversed. The slope is to the left. The resulting pattern is a pattern in a fine welt.
- Complex. The fabric is characterized by diagonals of different widths.
- Reinforced. The fiber is characterized by relief wide diagonals.
- Zigzag. The direction of inclination of the weft has an alternating character.

By composition:
- Cotton-paper, or surrey. This is the most dense material.
- Silk. Distinctive features: smoothness, pleasant shine.
- Woolen.
- Polyester.
- Viscose.
- Stretch (with the addition of elastane).

There are many variations in composition: natural and artificial fibers are combined in different proportions. But the basis is cotton, more often its share - from 70%.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Twill Fabric?

All products from this fabric have a number of pluses. Namely:

- Strength and wear resistance. This main advantage is provided thanks to the density of the fabric: it is 220-360 grams per square meter. meter.

- Good breathability, thermoregulation. Clothing gives the body "breathe". At the same time, in cold weather, it warms.

- Hygroscopicity (ability to absorb moisture).

- Non-electricity. The material does not "spark" - static electricity does not accumulate. Therefore, the fabric is suitable for sewing overalls for workers in chemical plants, etc.

- Hypoallergenic. Safety for humans is explained by the predominant share of cotton threads in fiber.

- Resistance to water and pollution (if the thing is treated with special impregnation).

- Practicality. Twill products are easily washed, quickly dry, do not shed and do not wrinkle, do not absorb odors.

The main weakness is that the twill can shrink after the first washing. Especially often shrinkage threatens the cotton variety, which, in addition, practically does not stretch.

Twill vs Denim: What Is the Difference Between Twill Pants and Jeans?

Twill is the name of the garment as well as the fabric used to make it. This fabric is made of pure cotton twill, which provides a lot of comfort for the wearer. This is why these pants are worn in summer and spring. Twill pants are also known as khaki pants in some places. This fabric was originally intended to be used as a uniform fabric for soldiers in the armies of France and Britain, but it captured the imagination of people in the United States and soon became so popular that leading ready-to-wear companies introduced their brands of twill pants for both men and women.

Jeans are twill pants that fit snugly around the body. It is universally worn by both men, women and people of all ages around the world. Although jeans are available in many colors today, it is blue that has become the hallmark of jeans and is considered the original color of jeans. Introduced by Levi Strauss in 1873, jeans have become one pants that have universal appeal and a closet is considered incomplete without a pair of blue jeans inside.

So we have the conclusion:

- Both jeans and twill pants are made of twill, but the twill used for jeans is heavier than the twill used to make twill pants.

- Jeans are considered more casual wear than twill pants, which are worn in the workplace.

- Jeans are predominantly blue in color, whereas twill pants are khaki or leather colored.

- Jeans are available in many cuts while twill pants are only available as comfortable pants.

- Jeans were introduced to the world as a copper riveted garment by Levi Strauss, while twill pants were designed to make uniforms for soldiers in the British and French armies.

How to Wear Twill Pants in Style?

Stylists advise to replace the usual denim things with models of tweed for summer or complement your business closet with them.

Free cut cotton pants will be comfortable in any weather.

A straight midi skirt is universal for office and summer walks.

Fashionable combination - sundress with a T-shirt. Black and white set is a stylish solution for studying, and colored models made of tweed will make your summer brighter.

Different Types of Twill

The most common raw materials used to produce twill fabrics are natural cotton, viscose, and sometimes synthetic additives (elastane, polyester).

Cotton twill

Material from cotton threads visually and tactilely resembles satin (satin) - a dense and comfortable fabric with excellent practical properties, also smooth and slightly shiny due to the nuances of the weave. Twill based on cotton fibers does not stretch, does not deform with long-term use.

You can also compare cotton twill with colored denim, only less thick threads are used for it compared to classic denim.

Traditionally, cottons are made in a basic version - smoothly dyed, without detailed patterns. The use of modern, reliably held on the surface of the material dyes allows the material to retain its appearance for a long time, do not burn out in the sun. With the development of the textile industry, factories have the opportunity to apply to the fabric of complex woven stable prints with large elements.

Viscose twill

This is another classic variation of tweel fabric, extremely popular for summer looks. This fabric is not weightless, but very breathable, perfectly draped, forming magnificent folds. It looks very effective in long styles - flowing dresses and skirts, free palazzo pants.

Most often, viscose twill is made of 100% viscose fiber, but sometimes elastane is added to it to improve fit.

Silk twill

It is a luxurious fabric for home textiles, exquisite stage costumes, boudoir dresses is made of natural silk threads (silk) with a small addition of elastane. This increases the wear resistance of the fabric and products made from it.

Blended twill or stretch twill

A slightly shiny smooth material with a high percentage of cotton fibers in the composition and the addition of elastane. Such tweed is used in the sewing of belts, which should fit well on the figure.

How to Wash Twill Pants?

Twill is a completely non-capricious material that is easy and pleasant to care for. It is ordinary, routine affairs, with which even not too economical a person will cope.

Wash fabric and products made from it can be washed in warm, hot water - up to 60 degrees. Both machine washing and hand washing are allowed. If you want to minimize the impact on the fabric and the product is not too dirty, use the delicate programs of your washing machine.

We recommend using liquid detergent formulas, without aggressive components, as the main washing agent. It is better to limit the use of bleach - despite the fact that dense cotton is generally not dangerous, the appearance of the thing after contact with caustic bleach can suffer. Use stain removers as needed, in strict accordance with the instructions.

Dry twill should be dried, avoiding direct sunlight. Ironing products made of cotton twill can be done from the underside, relying on the composition of the fabric when choosing the temperature mode. Medium temperature and cotton mode usually become the best options.

Like denim, cotton twill is best ironed slightly damp, you can use the built-in sprayer on your iron for this or use a damp cotton fabric as an intermediate layer.

Store clothes made of cotton twill woven fabrics in a dark closet, only hung neatly on hangers or rolled up in one or two folds on a shelf. Cotton storage covers can help keep the item attractive even longer.
