Why Do Women Wear Dresses?

by XiaoBo 11 Oct 2023

As you have realized from the title, today we are going to talk about dresses . If you open the closet of any girl or woman, there will surely be a dress in it. Business and evening, short and long, light and dense. Flowing, flying and tight fitting figure, gentle and seductive–all this "His Majesty" dress.

It has long been a symbol of attractiveness, femininity and grace!

"Why wear dresses?" - such a question can often be heard not only by teenage girls, but also by adult women.

7 Reasons To Wear Dresses

Here are 7 reasons why women love to wear dresses.

1. Time saving

The main reason to wear a dress is freedom of choice. You don't have to spend a huge amount of time thinking about your image.

Does this skirt go with this blouse or wear a sweater? The agony of choice comes in joy only when you try on your favorite things and you have a load of time. But you don't get the pleasure of trying things out if you have to leave the house in 30 minutes.

Dresses not only save you precious time, but they allow you look stylish!

2. Femininity

A woman looks feminine and attractive in a dress. Remember how often men often say about your appearance "Wow, super, you look great, charming" and so forth and in any variation. Are you starting to remember? I think the answer is obvious.

3. Comfort

If the dress fits well and suits you, you will feel much more confident and comfortable than in jeans or pants.

In summer, a dress makes it easier to bear the heat. It airily fits your body, does not pinch at the waist, under the knees.

In winter, there is no such discomfort. In most regions of Russia we still "insulate". And it is still easier to tidy up before work if you are wearing a dress. Not counting - 30 and - 40 temperatures.

4. Easier to hide shortcomings, emphasize the advantages

It is difficult to find jeans or pants that can hide the shortcomings of the figure. Dresses, especially those made of dense materials, can work wonders. Every girl should know her advantages and emphasize them skillfully.

5. Youth

When we wear a dress, we change our gait, there is lightness. We automatically straighten our backs, trying to keep our posture. We look younger before our eyes. The dress revitalizes a woman, gives her airiness.

6. Versatility

The same dress can be worn to work, to a party, to the theater. The main thing is to choose the right accessories and shoes. Agree that with pants and blouses to pull off such a trick is more difficult. If you look carefully and study the times of the beginning of TV airs of the USSR, all presenters (women) say in one voice that they could change the image of one dress. They put it back in the front, they used different collars, brooches, ties, scarves and many other things.

7. Holiday Mood

The dress itself is a dressy element of a woman's closet. Jeans, t-shirts, shirts and even skirts are something everyday. A dress is a joyful mood on the eve of an event. Especially if you put on your beautiful dress and smile at yourself in the mirror!

Remembering the dress is our strength. There are not many dresses, and there is always a reason to wear one!

The History of Dresses

First, about the etymology, that is, about the origin of the word.

The modern word "dress" comes from the Old Russian "platiѥ", which meant "clothing". "Platiѥ" is derived from "platъ", or "plat". "Plat," in turn, means not only "shawl" (not the most used meaning in modern language), but also "a large piece of cloth or canvas." Thus, "dress" and "shawl" are related words. Scholars report that the word "dress" was formed from "plat" on the same principle as the plural of the word "brothers" – from "brother": that is, "dress" is something made or assembled from several "plats", pieces of cloth.

When we say "dress" today, we most often mean a very definite thing: an item in a woman's closet with a bodice and skirt (the rest is optional). Meanwhile, the word "dress" denoted in principle any clothing worn over underwear, both male and female, even quite recently, several decades ago. For example, Ushakov's and Ozhegov's explanatory dictionaries give both notions as equivalent: both dress – as an exclusively female outfit, and dress – as a collective designation of clothing in general. Perhaps today the second meaning sounds a bit old-fashioned, but so far it is recognized as "working." Back in the earlyto mid- century it was quite possible to meet, for example, a store signboard "Men's and Women's Dress" – of course, this meant clothing as a general concept. At the dawn of its existence, the dress – a one-piece garment with a top and skirt – was worn by both men and women.

It is believed that the dress "grew" from ancient cloaks and capes. The first prototype of the dress appeared in ancient Greece: two pieces of cloth were fastened with pins on the shoulders and a belt at the waist. The Byzantines first sewed on a vestment with full sleeves. Initially, dresses were worn by everyone (including the primordial Russian sarafan was a garment for both women and men). Pants existed in principle, but they were "specialized" clothes for those who rode a lot on horseback (in the same ancient Romans, clothes with pants were considered "barbaric", belonging to the culture of barbarians). Men began to change from dresses to pants en masse only in the Middle Ages. This time it can be considered the birth of the dress as an approximation to the modern concept.

The subject of exclusively female closet dress became in the XV century. Characteristically, it was then that it began to change significantly and become more complicated - in general, in one way or another to be decorated. In the XVI-XVII centuries. Corsets, puffy skirts and sleeves became fashionable. Theatrical Baroque in the eighteenth century was replaced by a lighter Rococo, a hundred years later more simple silhouettes returned to fashion. The frames of dresses began to lighten, but crinolines, turnbuckles, petticoats still made outfits quite "clumsy" and complicated.

The revolution happened in the twentieth century: first, dresses were freed from the corset top and many petticoats, then the length began to decrease. At first, even the demonstration of ankles made a sensation, but in the 1920s, dresses up to the knee and a little higher came into fashion.

In 1926, the little black dress appeared - it was invented by Coco Chanel. In the 40's were in fashion puffy skirts and lantern sleeves. During World Wars, dresses were simple, knee-length, rectangular silhouette. Femininity and chic returned to fashion with the new look after the war thanks to Christian Dior. In the 50s, cocktail dresses spread. The 60's brought mini dresses, the 70's brought hippie and disco styles, the 80's brought pop art and geometrics. Since the 90's fashion for dresses has ceased to be so unambiguous. For the last three decades, a dress in retro style can be fashionable, and completely modern, and long, and super-short.

Different Types of Dresses

By length

1.Mini dresses

The legendary above-the-knee length mini dress first came into fashion in the 1960s and has remained popular ever since. Mini dresses are perfect for showing off your legs.

2.Midi dresses

Looking for a versatile dress that you can wear anywhere? Turn to the midi dress. With its hemline that sits between the knee and ankle, it can be dressed up or down and works well with conservative outfits. The midi dress looks good on everyone regardless of their figure type as these dresses can be with different necklines, sleeves and styles.

3.Maxi dresses

Few types of dresses look as stylish as a flowing maxi dress that reaches up to the ankle and can even reach the floor. This relaxed style is comfortable enough for lounging on the beach or at home, but it's also easy to dress up by picking the right accessories (like chandelier earrings or elegant heeled shoes).

By waistline

1.A-line dresses

The A-line dress, which fastens at the hips and then flares out, is a classic feminine style that looks great on pear-shaped women because it draws attention to the shoulders. The versatility of this style also makes it one of the most popular styles, as it can easily go from casual to dressy if you add elegant accessories.

2.Wrap dresses

When designer Diane von Furstenberg popularized wrap dresses in the 1970s, she made a lasting impression on the fashion world. This now classic style looks like this: one side of the dress is wrapped around the other and tied at the waist. There is often a clasp, hook or button in the front to keep it closed. Since the fit-and-flare dress creates an hourglass shape, it is ideal for those with an athletic build.

3.Princess dresses

If you've dreamed of being royalty for a day, a princess dress is for you. The tight bodice and waist with a flowing skirt emphasize your shoulders and arms. Princess dresses look great on any type of figure and are especially popular as wedding dresses.

By sleeve length

1.Strapless dresses

Want to show off your arms and shoulders? A strapless dress is for you. In the 1930s, women's clothing designer Mainbocher popularized this style, which had no sleeves or straps. Strapless dresses range from casual to formal, and they are a popular choice for wedding dresses.

2.Shoulderless dresses

Sometimes a strapless dress can seem too revealing. For something more sophisticated but just as feminine, try a shoulderless dress. It still shows off your shoulders but covers the top of your arms.

3.One Shoulder Dresses

If you need a style that will catch everyone's attention, look at the one shoulder dress. Its asymmetry makes a bold statement, and it's also suitable all year round, as you can find one shoulder dress with any type of sleeve, from long to spaghetti straps.

4.Halter dresses

Sleeveless dresses with halter straps that tie around the neck have been a staple summer option for decades, especially for those who want to show off their shoulders. This is another fun option for those looking for a different interpretation of a sleeveless dress.

5.Long Sleeve Dresses

On crisp fall days and cold winter nights, a long sleeve dress ensures you look great while staying warm. It's also a great option for those who want to cover their arms at any time of the year. Since they are available in a variety of silhouettes, everyone can find a long sleeve style that suits their body type.
