What Is Grunge Style?

by LiWenshan 09 Feb 2024

A sweater a couple of sizes too big, shabby ripped jeans, unlaced boots - that's grunge style. During its existence, the movement gained momentum and lost popularity. And up to our days reached modified. If you think you have nothing to do with the grunge style, you are most likely wrong. Particles of this movement, one way or another, are in everyone's closet. So, let's understand what grunge is, where it came from, and how to use the grunge style in modern realities.

Grunge is a style that today boldly bursts into our section. The grunge style is quite young, but it is widespread and much loved by fashionistas from small to large. Grunge (from English "repulsive" and "unkempt") originated in the 80s of the 20th century in the circles of rock musicians in the United States. Its progenitors and "ambassadors to the masses" were the band Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. The grunge style, which made a real revolution three decades ago and showed that carelessness could also be fashionable, returned to the catwalks this season. And with it, our closets are once again filled with coarse-knit sweaters, tractor-soled boots, shabby denim, and other bright attributes of the 1990s.

In recent years, grunge style clothing has become a popular fashion trend, and many people are interested in what it is and how to style it. Essentially, grunge-style clothing is characterized by its rough, shabby look, often with elements of oversized, worn denim and dark colors. To create this look, you must pair grunge style clothing with boots or sneakers, layer pieces such as flannel shirts or leather jackets, and complete them with necklaces and bandanas. Key elements of grunge fashion include comfortable, casual clothing that reflects an "anti-fashion" mentality and edgy alternative styles. Famous grunge icons include Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, and Eddie Vedder, who helped popularize the style in the 1990s. Today, grunge fashion trends continue to evolve, incorporating streetwear and punk rock culture elements to create a unique modern look.

Where and How Was the Grunge Style Born?

Chaotic, incomprehensible, exploding all the usual trends and frameworks, grunge style in clothes burst into fashion at the end of the last century. Today, it is preferred by young people and those who are far over 30. Grunge style has no limits and boundaries neither in age, social belonging, or nationalities: everyone loves it for the opportunity to be free and stylish

Grunge style (from American grunge, disgusting, unpleasant) began developing in the small American city of Seattle. This clothing style appeared in the late 1980s thanks to heavy metal and punk rock bands. But the peak of popularity grunge reached in the 1990s - teenagers of those years were crazy about the band Nirvana. Or rather, the style of its frontman, Kurt Cobain. The musician showed that he rejected glamor, fashion, and deliberate neatness. The singer's trademark was stretchy T-shirts, stripes, flannel shirts, and perpetually messy hair. His wife, Courtney Love, a singer-songwriter and grunge icon, did not lag behind. She wore combination dresses resembling nightgowns, did careless makeup, and created provocative images.

The designer who opened the way for grunge style in the world of high fashion is considered to be Marc, who, in 1993, for the first time, brought on the runway models in stretched sweaters; from the outside, models could be taken for just woken up teenagers who went to the supermarket in pajamas. Their looks were a combination of dresses and T-shirts with children's appliqués, corduroy jackets, rough boots, and large-knit hats. Around the same time, Belgian Martin started his creative path - his early collections were half made of re-stitched clothes he bought at flea markets.

It is now a love for vintage that is not surprising to anyone, but in those days, clothes found at flea markets and second-hand shops were considered common "junk," and the first fashion shows in grunge style were a real challenge. It's not to say that grunge style went out of fashion - just that other trends took place for a while. But in the mid-2010s, designers again remembered the rebellious style.

Types of Grunge Aesthetic Fashion

Hippie grunge
An unconventional combination of hippie style and classic, rebellious grunge. In this grunge style, bright colors are used more often than in others, and typical hippie elements - ethical patterns, woven sandals, bandages - are often found. As a result, the images are light, but from this, no less careless, and throw a protest to society. The presence of traditional gloomy shades preserves the leadership of the main style. The other is represented by bright saturated dominants, peculiar to hippies, diluting the dark palette.

Punk grunge
A sample of madness in clothing and extravagance - punk grunge. Like most trends, he is the fruit of a fusion of hooligan, complex styles. It looks, as a rule, empathetically, but always - impressive. Its inner essence manifests in ignoring the fashion world's conventional norms. This direction of grunge style for women is characterized by a contrived indifference to appearance and a deafening contrast of toilet articles. The fashion capsule is easily assembled from a multi-layered skirt of airy chiffon and a man's torn T-shirt, worn leather, and rough army boots. Chic marginality, manifested in a certain hooliganism in dressing, allows you to relax from the formalities and completely excludes the dress code. Each such bow involves care in the selection of things. Outfits made of leather, its empathetic elements, rough jewelry, and massive shoes become its mandatory components.

Soft grunge
It is the only kind of grunge style that allows grace, lightness, and sophistication. Soft grunge is light dresses, tops, skirts, and neat shoes without the typical roughness, complemented by elements of classic grunge - for example, plaid shirts or ripped jeans.

Loft grunge
A laid-back, personality-defining sub-style. Unlike the other types of grunge style, loft grunge does not pursue the goal of standing out, declaring itself, or showing its rebellious spirit. Materials in clothes are usually natural - cotton, leather, linen, and silhouettes are free, not restricting movement.

Rock grunge
Rock grunge is similar to punk, but things from quality materials are used to make up a closet here. Brands are often famous, with a high price tag. Characteristic features - chains, leather, dark colors. This direction of grunge style in women's clothing is a kind of challenge to pathos and shiny glamor. It is as close as possible to the original and looks rebellious. An important distinguishing feature is the use in forming capsules of things of exceptionally high quality and necessarily expensive.

Neo grunge
Neo is a kind of grunge style, the expression of which is a mixture of several styles. Its originality and extravagance consist of mixing elements of the main direction with casual components and romanticism features. A certain creative carelessness is manifested in combining one bow of laundered T-shirts and bright prints. They combine light dresses, tunics, and blouses with rough elements and emphasize carelessness. All neo grunge outfits are original, creative, and imaginative. Followers of grunge neo allow in clothes a hint of implicit sexuality and use in ensembles a combination of rough and romantic elements. In the sets, it is allowed to mix dark and pastel shades of the color scheme. Elements of romance and quirky additions are organic in combination with the initial carelessness inherent in neo and loft grunge styles in clothes for girls.

Grunge Style Outfits

Outfit 1: Plaid Flannel Shirt+ Jacket
In the 90s, grunge was borrowed from alt-rock culture, and thanks to the widespread popularity of the band Nirvana at the time, plaid button-down flannel shirts became synonymous with grunge. You can modernize this grunge style by doing away with the shirt and using the iconic pattern in a jacket, skirt, or matching set.

Outfit 2: Denim Outerwear+Knit Top
Another hallmark of the grunge style is layering. For spring, pair denim outerwear with lightweight knit tops, and don't be afraid to tie a flannel shirt around your waist.

Outfit 3: Sundress+Boots
Warm weather doesn't have to mean the end of your grunge style experiments. An airy sundress paired with rough boots conveys the casualness and toughness of grunge in a brunch-approved silhouette.

Outfit 4: Patchwork Skirt
Conflicting and contrasting prints and patterns are the hallmarks of grunge style. Remember, grunge is too cool to care about conformity. If you don't quite trust your taste for combining the mismatched, try using one piece of clothing, such as a patchwork skirt or top that combines two different prints.

Outfit 5: Pleated Skirt
Grunge style doesn't have to be loud or flashy. You can support this style with a simple piece like a pleated skirt. Cage is by far the grungiest of the options, but any pleated pleated skirt sends out grunge style signals.

Outfit 6: Classic Army Boots
Shoes are a key part of grunge style, and when it comes to boots, the more solid, the better. Classic army boots combine durability and comfort, two essential grunge style elements.

Outfit 7: Varsity Jacket+Heeled Boots
Nothing reminds you of a 90s grunge style like a size-less flannel shirt under a varsity jacket. To bring this grunge style into the modern era, complement it with heeled boots to give it a bit of va-va-voom.

Outfit 8: Cargo Pants+Fitting Tops
While you don't have to wear oversized clothes to create a grunge style look, at least one loose-fitting piece will help convey this style. It's impossible to go overboard with oversized grunge style pieces, but if you prefer tighter-fitting tops, try adding wide legged cargo pants or scuffed jeans to the look.

Outfit 9: Skinny Pant+Flannel Shirt
The more delicate side of the grunge style emphasizes femininity. A combination dress paired with boots, tights, flannel shirt, or without, emphasizes the more gentle side of the grunge while staying true to its style.
