What Is a Puffer Coat?

by XiaoBo 08 Nov 2023

Today, a puffer coat is called almost any winter outerwear made of synthetic fabric, but, of course, this is not true. Puffer coat from other types of coats is primarily distinguished by its filler – it must be natural down.

Down filler is the basis of the puffer coat, and it is through its use that it gets all the characteristics for which it is so loved by customers. Puffer coats are primarily characterized by high thermal insulation and low weight, which allows you to wear them comfortably even in the most unfavorable weather. These qualities led to their appearance as overalls for representatives of various "harsh" professions: mountaineers, geologists, scientists and many others.

However, over time, manufacturers of this type of clothing turned their attention to the market for everyday outerwear and began producing "civilian" models. They do not have such outstanding thermal insulation indicators, but this is not necessary - for the inhabitants of the metropolis, it is not necessary to be able to stay outside for hours at extremely low temperatures. And their design is no longer so subordinated to practicality, giving free rein to more daring ideas.

History of Puffer Coats

The history of the creation of puffer coats is interesting: according to one version, this clothing appeared in the XII century in Asian countries. Presumably, China began to sew the first prototypes of puffer coats, as a material used cotton, these products were decorated with stones, another distinctive feature was a fairly large weight and length on the floor.

According to another version, the first puffer coats appeared in Norway, where the harsh climate was the starting point for the development of warm and comfortable clothing. Puffer coats became a good alternative to fur products, and it was here that eiderdown began to be used as a filler. In the XVI century in Norway, nurseries were created where specially trained people bred eider ducks and collected down for sewing puffer coats. After a while, Eiderdown has high performance and is one of the best in the world.

Later puffer coats began to spread all over the world, bird feathers and down were used for insulation. There have been experiments with the use of chicken and turkey down, but they did not led to a positive result, the body practically did not breathe, and it fizzled. Thus, the best solution is the downing of waterfowl, as their feathers have special lubrication.

In the XX century puffer coats began to be mass produced, they began to be used as specialized clothing by many mountaineers, military skiers, foresters and polar explorers. Such clothes allowed us not to freeze sometimes in extremely low temperatures, and also created coziness and comfort. In 1922, mountaineer George Ingle Fing used a puffer coat when climbing Everest, in 1940 Eddie Bauer received a patent for the production of puffer coats, and 12 years later in the U.S. launched the production of army puffer coats. Around the second half of the 20th century, these garments spread and became more affordable. Some designers began to use them in their fashion collections, and wearing a puffer coat became fashionable.

Until the end of the XX century, puffer coats were usually sportswear. One of the famous fashion designers John Galliano in his collection developed a woman's original puffer coat, which later became incredibly popular.

To date, puffer coats are hugely popular, very much in demand and indispensable in the winter season. One of the best is considered puffer coats from the down of waterfowl, durable outer fabric protects against bad weather. There are even models that can be used at 85 degrees. A wide range of models allows you to choose almost any color, they artfully transform the image and provide comfort and coziness.

How To Choose a Puffer Coat?

Moisture-repellent impregnation

On the label of the product, it is denoted DWR. It even allows fabrics that have the property to absorb moisture to repel it or absorb it in smaller quantities;

Fittings

Pay attention to zippers, rivets, buttons, if they are provided by the design. The zipper should be easy to fasten without "snacking" the prongs. If there are problems with the zipper, it will quickly come into disrepair.

Fabric pad on zipper

The fabric lining protects against blowing, and if it is not there, the space between the teeth will penetrate cold air.

Quilting

Quilting the puffer coat, that is, dividing it into conventional "block sections" provides even distribution of down. If the puffer coat is quilted, it will prevent the filling from piling up and prevent it from migrating outside the cells. The smaller the blocks, the better.

Seam quality

Carefully inspect all the seams of the product – they should be tight, without protruding thread ends. The stitching is even, without interruptions or hesitation;

The information on the label

Look at what conditions of care the puffer coat indicates the manufacturer – it indicates the mode of washing, the possibility of ironing, water temperature, whether you can use bleach and stain removers. Do not buy a puffer coat with a ban on washing in a washing machine, if you do not plan to give it to the dry cleaner, the first wash in a domestic machine can lead to damage to the product.

Size

Be sure to choose the right size puffer coat - don't forget to put on tight clothes, bend over, raise your arms when trying on. Never buy a down jacket that is not comfortable – the puffer coat should be loose. Pay attention to length – for cold winters, a long model at least up to the middle of the thigh or a very long down jacket is suitable.
