What Is A Jersey Dress?

by XiaoBo 15 Nov 2023

Jersey dress is made of jersey. It is a dense, elastic double-faced knitted fabric with unique qualities! Due to the double-faced weave of the yarns, its edges do not curl during cutting, the cuts are practically free of shrinkage, at the same time it has a sufficient degree of elasticity and fits perfectly on the figure.

Due to its solid density, it is not transparent (the only exception is white jersey, where there is a slight degree of transparency) and holds its shape perfectly. The content of a large number of viscose fibers in the composition allows the fabric to have good hygroscopic properties, the fabric is not electrified. Nylon fibers create an "expensive" appearance, moderate noble gloss and elasticity of the fabric. And due to the content of polyester fibers, the fabric has increased resistance to abrasion and easy care. Most often jersey is used for sewing dresses, pencil skirts , pants, jackets, cardigans and sportswear, children's products (including school uniforms), as well as accessories: hats, snoods, scarves. Elastane gives the fabric a good degree of stretchability, which allows sewing products to tightly fit the figure.

Quite a high degree of density allows you to create models, combined by color with shaped reliefs and inserts, with proper sewing seam will not stretch in the places of stitching two parts of different colors. Jersey is often used in sportswear. It makes sports pants sit perfectly on the figure, while not stretching out at the knees (which can occur when sewing sports pants made of 100% cotton fabric).

History of Jersey Dress

One of the most influential and famous women in the fashion world, Coco Chanel, was unique and unpredictable. One of her most interesting inventions in the fashion world is the jersey dress, a material that was previously thought to be suitable only for men's underpants. The jersey dress became a symbol of its era and is still interpreted by various designers in modern collections.

But how did Coco Chanel arrive at such an unusual choice?

It is often said that Coco Chanel invented the straight silhouette of the dress. This is not quite true. Long before her, the famous Paul Poiret freed the female body from corset shackles and let clothes flow over it. The silhouettes of his dresses were straight, tapered to the bottom, often not fitted at all.

But outfits from Poiret remained long and extremely refined. The young lady in such a dress was beautiful, but could not engage in active labor. Other fashion designers sewed simpler outfits, but none managed to create something inexpensive, practical and comfortable for an active emancipated lady.

Meanwhile, World War I dictated its own rules of life. Most women were forced to work and needed clothes that did not restrict the step, arm movements and in which they would not look as if they had escaped from the restaurant to the kitchen.

Coco Chanel understood this need and began experimenting with new materials to create more comfortable and functional outfits. One of Coco Chanel's most significant inventions was the jersey dress.

Previously, this material had only been used for underwear (actually, not just men's underwear), but Coco saw the potential in its elasticity and softness. It is said to have come about by accident. Fabric supplies were tight, and a customer refused to buy back his order from the manufacturer. The jersey he ordered was too coarse for lingerie. Coco, on the other hand, thought it was just the right density for a dress.

These jersey dresses were a breakthrough in the fashion world of the time. They became a symbol of freedom and independence for women who no longer wanted to be constrained by corsets and skirts to the ground. At the same time, jersey dresses remained elegant and feminine.

In fact, originally they were not really dresses, but ensembles consisting of a skirt, blouse or jacket. Coco got the idea from knitted tracksuits for women, which featured straight and rather rough cardigans. But her jacket, made of poorly draping, unruly but soft jersey, she decided to belt it. Soon the models gained more variety and jersey Coco began to buy better quality, dense, and even multicolored. And since 1920, they have begun to shorten rapidly, revealing the knees.

We must pay tribute to Chanel's courage: she wore her dresses herself to demonstrate the new fashion on the street and attract clients.

Coco Chanel was always bold and unconventional in her decisions. She rejected bulging shapes, preferring simplicity and brevity. Chanel believed that priority should be given to the silhouette of the dress, not its decorations. The jersey dress became a symbol of the era and is still modeled today, becoming a classic trend.
