What Is Merino Wool?

Merino wool is an all-natural fiber obtained by shearing a special breed of sheep called Merinos. Unlike most of the popular breeds of these animals, Merinos have a very soft wool, which is practically devoid of stiff awns. Even so, the production of woolen plaids goes far from the entire woolen mass, but only that part of it is sheared from the animal's withers. Shearing is carried out at a strictly defined time. In addition to the natural softness, the fibers have many other advantages. For example, thanks to lanolin, which has an antiseptic effect, the wool is completely unattractive to any kind of dust mites and other microorganisms that love to settle in our beds.

Another advantage of merino wool is its long fibers, the growth characteristics of which make the material elastic. The natural curl of merino fibers depends on the ability of wool to keep warm. In addition, this material does not cause irritation and skin reactions, even in people prone to allergies. The only disadvantage of merino wool is that it is more expensive than ordinary wool.

Merino wool is also antibacterial due to creatine in its composition and is environmentally friendly. Our store has a wide range of men's and women's clothing with these valuable properties. We offer you thermal underwear, leggings, leggings, pants, robes, and shirts made of merino wool. You and your family will forget about the cold, allergies and other unpleasant phenomena with such clothes. Knowing how to wash things made of Merino wool will help you keep their shape and exquisite appearance for a long time!

Wash Merino Wool in a Washing Machine

The greatest advantage of merino wool products is that they are perfectly washable in the washing machine. To do this, you need to use the wool washing program. Do not wash woolen items in the normal mode, as the high rotation speed can damage them. If the washing machine is not equipped with such a program, then you need to set a temperature of 30 degrees and a spin speed of 600 or fewer revolutions per minute in the manual mode. The mechanical impact of the drum during washing and spinning mustn't damage merino fibers.

It is recommended that merino wool items be washed separately from other items, sorting them by color. Machine washing is acceptable for small Merino items - socks, mittens, and caps. Such items will not lose shape when washing, which cannot be said about large items. Sweaters, skirts, and pants can lose their shape, so it is better to wash them by hand. Before placing in the drum of the machine, things should be turned to the wrong side. This will prevent the formation of lint and strong fluffing on the outside. Then, pour gel for washing in a special compartment and set the modes. When choosing a means for machine washing, it is recommended to prefer liquid means for washing wool. Do not use chlorine-containing means or means with bioactive substances - enzymes. These substances break down the protein contained in wool bleaches, which causes damage to the structure of the fabric.

Washing Merino Wool by Hand?

Hand washing is recommended for merino wool garments, especially if the yarn is corded. Merino wool garments will last a long time if cleaned by hand. This is the gentlest way to wash woolen garments. Pour into a water basin (the temperature should be no more than 30 g) to immerse the product completely. Add a mild detergent. You can use a special detergent for merino wool or another suitable for delicate fabrics (wool and silk). Alternatively, you can use shampoo to wash your hair. Do not use fabric softeners or bleach with chlorine to wash merino wool.

Completely immerse the item in water and leave it for 3-5 minutes. Then, gently rinse the item in water of the same temperature to remove the laundry detergent. Sometimes, it is necessary to rinse 2-3 times to make the water run off completely clean, without foam. It is not necessary to twist the merino wool product. It should be gently wrung out to remove the water. You can not keep it in the water longer than 5 minutes, as the product may stretch unevenly.

After soaking, the clothes are gently washed. Rinse the fabric several times in clean, warm water. Merino wool is wrung out carefully so as not to damage the fibers. Twisting the fabric is not recommended!

Do not twist the product. Take the thing and squeeze it out as much water as possible. You can spread the merino wool products on a towel and roll them up to absorb the water. Then, spread the item flat on a dry towel or a drying rack and let it dry. This wool has its peculiarities - it is soft and delicate due to its airiness. However, after washing, it may seem that the thing stretched; it is enough to spread the product for drying and let dry - the original dimensions will return.

How to Dry and Iron Merino Wool?

It is important to know how to wash 100% merino wool , how to dry it, and whether it can be ironed. This also affects the product's shape retention.

If dried and suspended, woolen garments can stretch and lose their shape. Therefore, it is recommended that merino wool items be dry horizontally. To do this, the product can be placed on a terry towel or cotton sheet and rolled up so that the fabric absorbs moisture. At the same time, you can gently press on the roll to squeeze out the water. After that, the item is spread out on a dry towel on a horizontal surface to dry. Drying merino wool products away from heat sources is recommended to avoid exposure to ultraviolet radiation. It should be an open, well-ventilated space. When drying vertically, woolen garments will stretch and sag. The fabric should not be dried on radiators or near other electrical appliances.

As a rule, merino wool clothes do not wrinkle, so ironing is not particularly necessary. If you still think that the product should be ironed, then for this purpose, it is recommended to use iron with steam and select the mode of ironing wool. In this case, the iron should not be moved, as in the case of conventional ironing. Having put it in a wrinkled place, you need to hold it for a few seconds and then move it to the next one. Merino fabric is ironed with steam. The matter should be processed with an iron through an additional layer. A moistened towel will do. Ironing is done only when the material is completely dry.

Useful tips:
- Wrapping the merino wool product in a dry terry towel to remove excess moisture is better. You can gently press the roll to squeeze out the water. The garment can also be blotted with a cotton sheet.

- Wait for the item to dry completely, then remove or put it on.

- Do not move the iron as you would when ironing regular clothes. Place it on the desired spot, press it down for a few seconds and remove it. Do this with all crumpled areas.

How to Fix Damaged Merino Wool?

Stain removal
To remove stains from merino wool products, we recommend using special wool products or delicate soaps. Stains should be treated immediately before washing to prevent the stains from being drawn into the fibers.

Odor removal
If the merino wool garments have acquired an unpleasant odor,' you can use air fresheners or natural aromatic oils. It is also recommended that the garments be air-conditioned outdoors.

Maintaining the shape of the garments
To maintain the shape of Merino woolen products, they should be stored correctly' without twisting or shrinking and avoid contact with sharp objects to avoid damaging the fibers.
