How to Wash Corduroy?

by LiWenshan 15 Mar 2024

Corduroy clothing is appreciated for its comfort and practicality. The original plush material binds well and looks elegant. Corduroy is a fabric that looks noble and comfortable, so it is difficult to confuse it with other fabrics. It is characterized by a lot of soft baubles on the front side. They can go in rows along the entire length or form beautiful printed patterns. This fabric is soft to the touch, solid and durable, and very popular for sewing a variety of clothes and accessories. However, it requires careful handling, regular cleaning and meticulous maintenance to help it stay attractive for longer.

Corduroy fabrics are classified as taffeta fabrics because they have small piles throughout the surface. The pile of corduroy is the rand, located on the front of the fabric. Sometimes, the welt is replaced by a relief pattern that is applied with a unique technique. Corduroy is a durable and beautiful fabric from which pants, coats , hats, and other closet details are sewn. Corduroy can have a different composition, which affects how the fabric is cut, worn and cared for. However, because of its attractive appearance and high quality, this material can only retain its attractive appearance and high quality if properly washed. If it is not properly cared for, it loses its properties and becomes unusable. How do you wash corduroy clothes to keep their appearance longer?

How to Wash Corduroy by Hand?

The classic manual method should be preferred for the care of corduroy - it is the most suitable. As for using a washing machine for this purpose is fraught with numerous damages to the fabric structure due to too strong revolutions of the machine. There is also no need to use stain removers and bleaches. As a result of their influence, the structure of the fabric can also be disturbed, which will undoubtedly affect its appearance.

The fabric walls do not need to rub against each other - dirt is removed with a special sponge and foam surface. You can also use a brush as an analogue, but necessarily with a head of the soft pile. Applying considerable effort is not necessary - enough tangible contact with the corduroy surface.

At the end of washing, corduroy does not need to be pressed hard - it is much better if all the moisture dries naturally in the drying process in order to minimize the risk of damage to the fabric. Remove from the lather, turn inside out and rinse several times with cold water by hand so that no soapy streaks remain. Allow excess moisture to drain out. Dry the pants in natural conditions to retain their original properties longer.

Washing corduroy clothes by hand is as follows:

- Pre-cleaned from foreign objects, the corduroy is placed in a basin with water at room temperature. In the water, you need to add dissolved powder, soap solution or other suitable detergent in advance.
- With the help of a foam sponge or a brush with a soft pile, the surface of corduroy clothes is cleaned of all existing contaminants. This is done consistently and carefully with an emphasis on problem areas. Rubbing hard is unnecessary; a tangible contact with the corduroy surface is sufficient.
- The washed clothes are removed from the basin, rinsed in cold water, and turned inside out.

How to Wash Corduroy in a Washing Machine?

Ideally, it is not recommended to use a washing machine to clean corduroy clothes because, in this case, the machine's high power and high performance can affect the quality of the fabric being poorly washed. If there is still no time for cleaning with your own hands, or this method categorically does not suit you, it is allowed to use the machine, but only in the delicate washing mode. However, if the contaminants are solid and traditional manual processing with them can not cope, you can, at your own risk, resort to washing with a machine. To make your corduroys serve you for a long time and retain their attractiveness, you need to follow a few essential rules.

First, you should pay attention to the choice of powder or liquid for washing. Use mild detergents designed for delicate fabrics. This will help preserve the colour and texture of corduroy and prevent the appearance of stains from aggressive chemicals.

Before loading the items into the washing machine, turn them inside out. This will help protect the pile from damage and maintain colour saturation. For additional protection, it is recommended to use unique bags for washing, which minimize friction between the products and the walls of the drum.

The choice of washing mode plays a crucial role in the care of corduroy. Give preference to a delicate mode with a water temperature of no more than 30°C. Avoid using intensive programs and high temperatures, as they can lead to shrinkage and loss of shape of products. The spin speed should be kept to a minimum to avoid damage to the pile and excessive twisting of the corduroy.

During the loading process, try not to overload the washing machine. Corduroy items need enough space to wash efficiently without risk of damage. An even load distribution is also essential to prevent excessive friction and lint formation.

High-speed spinning, in any case, strongly affects the fabric. If it has a cotton base, it is fraught with shrinkage; if the mixture composes the appearance of pills, if the fabric is synthetic, it can have strong creases with which it is not easy to cope. Compliance with all product label recommendations allows you to wash corduroy as often as possible and without consequences.

Useful recommendation! As with hand washing, you can use vinegar to give corduroy things an additional gloss - only when using a washing machine is the substance poured into the conditioner compartment. It is not necessary to pour a lot - 4-5 tablespoons will be enough. You can also use shavings of laundry soap.

Removing Stains from Corduroy

Before you start cleaning stains on corduroy, it is essential to know what type of stain you are dealing with. Different stains require different cleaning methods. Here are some general guidelines:

- Don't delay cleaning. The sooner you remove the stain, the more likely it is to disappear completely.
- Check the label. Corduroy may have care features listed on the label. Be sure to read them before you begin cleaning.

There is nothing complicated about the process of removing greasy, oily stains from corduroy fabric. Cleaning takes place in two steps. The first step requires you to do the following: pour the absorbent on the stain so that the powder completely covers the stain and the part of the material next to it; leave it for two to three hours or longer. The idea is that the absorbent applied to the stain will completely absorb the greasy, oily substances that formed the stain.

As for the soaking time, it depends entirely on the stain. If oil or grease has soaked through the fabric, keeping the absorbent on the contamination for at least three hours is necessary. The older the stain, the longer the powder is kept on it.

If the contamination appeared long ago, for example, a week before cleaning, the absorbent should be left overnight. Important point: if you are removing a dried stain of mixed type on corduroy, for example, left by mayonnaise sauce or confectionery cream, the absorbent should be slightly moistened beforehand, using an atomizer.

If you need to clean stains from a vertical surface, such as furniture upholstery or corduroy curtains, use film and adhesive tape. The absorbent should be slightly moistened and placed on a piece of film and pressed against the stain. The film with the cleaning agent is fixed with adhesive tape.

How to Iron Corduroy Correctly?

If you need to iron things made of corduroy, the best place to start is with the preparation of an ironing board. On the surface, it is necessary to lay a multi-layered soft backing; a plaid will work perfectly. For products made of cotton corduroy, iron with a useful function, "steam," is recommended, and corduroy with elastane fibres should be ironed with a slightly heated iron. In the process, it is not desirable to apply pressure at all.

When the product must be ironed from the front side, to avoid squashing piles and unattractive shiny areas, it is recommended to spray the clothes slightly moist. It should be slightly moistened but not wet; otherwise, the fabric may shrink.

For things that are very delicate and made of corduroy, we recommend ironing on the weight. To do this, you need to warm up the iron and try to iron products with light movements under the influence of steam, which is formed by the interaction of a warm iron and wet corduroy. Available folds, will quickly spread and at the same time you will be able to professionally lift the pile of corduroy. By choosing this method of ironing, you will be able to refresh your corduroy product at home.
