How to Choose A Leather Jacket

A leather jacket could be seen as a quite classic garment in spring and autumn. It is simple and neat, and several unisex leather jackets can even be versatile for people of both genders and of all ages. So plenty of ladies would like to choose a leather jacket. Then the question is, how to choose a leather jacket?

From the perspective of the fabrics, the most frequently used materials in the manufacture of leather coats are cowhide and sheepskin. Some leather jackets are made of pigskin, but they are relatively rare. Apart from the genuine leather, artificial leather such as PU leather has also become one of the most popular choices because they are eco-friendly. If you pay the most attention to the durability of the leather jacket, then the one made of cowhide is perhaps the best choice. If you prefer a leather jacket that is softer and skin-friendly, choose a leather jacket made of sheepskin. If you would like to buy a leather jacket with a lower coat, or if you are an environmentalist, a PU leather jacket is worth a try.

Then let us talk about the style of the leather jacket. You may have noticed that some leather jackets have a very smooth surface, while some have the texture of animal skin left on the surface. The latter type is generally with more realistic texture, while the former type will be brighter in terms of the visual effect. There is no superiority or inferiority between the two. You can just choose one of the styles according to your preferences.

Then, some details also matter. For example, if you prefer the feeling of a tight fit, it is better for you to choose a zip up leather jacket. But remember to ensure that the zipper will not get stuck before paying. Or you can also choose a buttoned leather jacket. For some adjustable space, you can choose a double-breasted jacket. Or a single-breasted jacket is good enough for you if you do not have plenty of demands.

Although most of the leather jackets are dyed black or brown, you can also find some red or white ones. To avoid making mistakes, you can just choose a classic one in black. But if you are good at playing colors, you can also choose another color according to your preference or the four-season color theory.

How to Clean A Leather Jacket?

A leather jacket is classic, cool but also vulnerable. If you throw it into the washing machine and let the leather jacket be repeatedly rubbed and stretched in the washing machine, then it will become deformed. The conventional or violent washing ways are not suitable for leather jackets and will bring indelible harm to the leather coat. So how can we clean a leather jacket in the right way?

Above all, if the stain is not large or difficult to remove, you do not need to wash the entire leather jacket. You can bring a piece of cloth and dip it into the water, using this wet cloth to wipe the surface of the leather jacket. You can also add some soapy water to strengthen the cleaning effect. Some dust or other powdery dirt can be treated in this way.

If the stain is stubborn, water will not be able to remove it. In this case we need some neutral detergent. Since the main component of animal leather is protein, both acidic and alkaline substances will cause a certain degree of corrosion to it. Therefore, the choice of detergent is also important. You can apply a little detergent to the edge of your jacket to see whether it will make the jacket fade or not. After making sure that the detergent you have chosen will not damage the leather jacket, you can soak a piece of clean cloth in the detergent, and then bring it out to wipe the leather coat. But remember that after wiping the leather jacket with the wet clothe which have been soaked into the detergent, you still need to wipe the surface of the jacket with a dry clothe.

In addition, the neck is one of the parts that secretes the most grease and sweat, so correspondingly, the collar is also one of the dirtiest parts on a leather jacket. Therefore, during the process of cleaning a leather jacket, more attention should be paid to the collar. Ordinary detergent can not meet our demands here, so we need some alcohol. For this kind of specific and small areas, you can use a smaller cloth, such as a makeup remover cotton pad dipped in alcohol to clean.

If your entire leather jacket becomes extremely dirty, and must be cleaned thoroughly, then please read the label on the jacket carefully. If hand washing is permitted, then you can carefully wash it by hands. But on any occasion, do not use machine washing unless absolutely necessary.

How to Iron A Leather Jacket?

The basic principle of ironing clothes is to remove the wrinkles on the clothes under the circumstance of extremely high temperature. But as we have mentioned above, the leather jackets can be very vulnerable. Too high temperature also brings irreversible harm to them. So if we have found several wrinkles on the leather jacket, how can we iron it to avoid damage at the same time of removing the wrinkles?

Firstly, please set your iron to the lowest temperature, which will reduce the harm caused to the leather jacket to a large extent. This rule applies to both irons and steamers.

Secondly, remember that in any case, the iron or steamer can not come into direct contact with the leather. Therefore, you can choose to turn the leather coat inside out and iron from the inner side of the jacket. But in some cases, the effect will not be very satisfactory.

So we recommend the other way. That is to place a piece of cotton cloth or a ironing board between your leather jacket and the iron while ironing. You can place the leather jacket on a platform above all, and then cover the wrinkled areas with a layer of cotton cloth. Then iron on the cotton cloth. The leather jacket below the cloth will also be flatter. If you are used to using a steamer to remove the wrinkles, remember to keep a distance of at least 15 cm between the steamer and the leather jacket.

Do not iron a certain part of the leather coat repeatedly in a short time. After ironing it once, cool down for a period of time before ironing it again if you can still find wrinkles on the jacket. Otherwise, however hot-resistant the cotton clothe is, great harm will be done to the leather jacket too.

To make the leather jacket flatter, you can also gently press and stretch the jacket surface with your hands. But do not press or stretch too hard. Otherwise, the leather jacket will also be deformed.

Tips on Caring for the Leather Jacket

Indeed, the process of cleaning, ironing and caring for the leather jackets are quite complex. But if properly maintained, a leather jacket can last for more than ten years. So from this perspective, all the hard work is worth it. Apart from the tips on cleaning and ironing of the leather jackets mentioned above, we will also provide you with some tips on caring for the leather jackets.

After cleaning the leather jacket, you can apply some leather oil on the surface of the jacket for maintenance. But do not do this too frequently. Twice a year is enough. If it is hard for you to find leather oil, you can also use the glycerin or petrolatum to replace it.

It is better to hang the leather jacket up. Do not fold it up or put it at the bottom of your wardrobe. Otherwise, wrinkles will appear on the leather coat again quickly.

Do not expose your leather jacket to the sunshine directly. It is better to put it to somewhere cool and ventilated. After cleaning your leather jacket, it should be air dried. Do not put your jacket on a heater or use a hair dryer to quicken this process. Otherwise, you will find that the effect is counterproductive.

If the leather jacket has been stained by rarely seen materials such as gasoline or paint, then, ask for help from more professional persons. In this case, dry cleaning is probably the most suitable choice.
